Price: US$230.56 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A Tauchnitz edition of this major Romance by Nathaniel Hawthorne, in a lovely vellum binding. The two volumes bound as one. Transformation, Or The Romance of Monte Bene was the last of the four major romances by Hawthorne. It is set in a fantastical Italy on the eve of the American Civil War. Thematically and in terms of genre the novel is a mixture of fable, gothic novel, pastoral writing and a travel guide. Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz founded his Leipzig publishing firm in 1837 at the age of 20. His specialism was publishing foreign language books, particularly English. He began his firm at a defining period for English literature, as popular authors were producing a wider range of work in differing genres and forms. Tauchnitz built a good reputation with many leading British and American authors which lead him to be the principal publisher of English Language books in continental Europe from 1840 to 1940. In some instances authors sent Tauchnitz their proofs in order for them to be published at the same time as the British publisher, or in some cases before. In nineteenth century Britain, an author's work could be published by several different publishing houses leading to the production of their novels in a variety of formats. By Tauchnitz owning the publishing rights to nearly all the leading British authors for the first time there was a consistent format. Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist of the Dark Romantic genre. Much of his writings focus on New England with Puritan inspired allegories. His works often centre on inherent evil and the sin of humanity. In a half vellum binding with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with patches of rubbing to the paper covered boards, particularly to the rear board. Bumping to the head and tail of spine. Handling marks and fading to vellum spine as expected. Title page to volume I has a closed tear from the top of page at gutter to centre. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are age toned with instances of light scattered spots. Very Good

The Marble Faun: Or, The Romance of Monte Beni, also known by the British title Transformation, was the last of the four major romances by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and was published in 1860. The Marble Faun, written on the eve of the American Civil War, is set in a fantastical Italy. Tauchnitz was the name of a family of German printers and publishers. They published English language literature for distribution on the European continent outside of Great Britain, including initial serial productions of Charles Dickens. Though copyright protection did not exist between nations in the 19th century, Tauchnitz paid the authors for the works they published, and agreed to limit their sales of English-language books to the European continent, as authors like Dickens and Bulwer-Lytton had separate arrangements for publication and sale in Great Britain.

One of the most popular of several Tauchnitz titles sold as souvenirs in Italian tourist cities, bound in decorative parchment over boards and extra-illustrated with photographs of important sites and statues. The American title (and Hawthorne's chosen title) of the novel was The Marble Faun, but UK publishers altered it to Transformation. Though the latter title was used by Tauchnitz, this copy is titled The Marble Faun on the front covers, suggesting it was marketed to American tourists in Florence. TODD/BOWDEN 515Db and 516Db. Description: First Tauchnitz Edition (Todd & Bowden's fourth setting, impression Db), "copyright edition" on title page, of Hawthorne's Italian romance cum travel guide. Two volumes in one, thick foolscap 8vo (155 x 107mm): xii,292; vi,280,[2]pp, with 24 mounted period photographs of Roman monuments, statuary, buildings, and street scenes. Contemporary Florentine vellum, spine decorated and titled ("The Marble Faun") in gilt, upper cover paneled and titled ("Roma") in gilt, marbled end papers, edges stained red. Tightly bound and clean throughout, a virtually pristine example, aside from slight waviness to margins of inserted leaves with photographs, which are printed on heavy coated stock. (The photographs were sold to the tourist trade and inserted by Italian binders into copies, most, as here, with half-titles removed.) Todd & Bowden 515Db & 516Db ("the Tauchnitz book most often found extensively extra-illustrated with photographs and found in elaborately decorated vellum"). Clark A23.4. BAL 7620 and 7621 (for first editions). Grolier Hawthorne 32 (for discussion of London and Boston titles). Boni, p. 143. Popular Tauchnitz titles sold as a souvenir in Italian tourist cities, with photographs of important sites and statues. Originally published in 1860, in London (as Transformation: or, The Romance of Monte Beni) and in Boston (as The Marble Faun). Written on the eve of the American Civil War, the novel is set in a fantastical Italy, combining elements of fable, pastoral, gothic romance, and travel guide. Hawthorne supposedly was inspired to write it when he saw the Faun of Praxiteles (in our copy, the frontispiece to volume 1) in the Palazzo Nuovo of the Capitoline Museum in Rome, and he included extended descriptions of art and architecture as backdrop to the tale of mystery, murder, and romance. Thus, it became customary for nineteenth-century travelers to Rome and Florence to use the book as a guide, rebound (often in elaborately decorated vellum, as here) and extra-illustrated with tipped-in photographs of the scenes Hawthorne described. A profusion of elaborate formats in special and bespoke bindings embellished with widely varying numbers of photographs exist, and thus few copies are identical. ("The absence, presence, or sequence of inserted photographs has no significance in determining textual priority," according to Clark.) Further complicating matters is the confusion created by the Tauchnitz practice of preserving the 1860 title page unchanged through "at least four editions and an untold number of printings extending well into the twentieth century. Four settings of type have been identified . . . more may exist." (Clark) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Description: A selection of from the Tauchnitz 'Collection of British Authors' series. This collection contains the following works: Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'Transformation: Or, the Romance of Monte Beni', complete in two volumes. This work was published simultaneously in America under the title 'The Marble Faun' (as seen on the title of this copy) and is the last of Hawthorne's four major romances. These volumes contain no illustrations and show no evidence of removal. A first edition copy of John Addington Symonds's 'New Italian Sketches'. This work contains selections from two earlier texts, 'Sketches and Studies in Italy' and 'Italian Byways', and provides a charming account and study of places for travellers in Italy. Edna Lyall's charming novel 'Donovan: A Modern Englishman', complete in two volumes. 'Edna Lyall' was the pseudonym for Ada Ellen Bayly, the renowned English novelist and early feminist who published eighteen incredibly popular novels and novellas between 1879 and 1902. Her works are renowned for their historical focus, and for her rather melodramatic plots and caricatured characters. Frederic William Farrar's 'Darkness and Dawn', complete in three volumes. This work of historical fiction recalls true events of Pagan and Christian history, and is clearly demonstrative of the author's Anglican faith. Indeed, beyond his fictional works, Farrar is best remembered as a cleric of the Church of England and the Archdeacon of Westminster from 1883 to 1894. Each work is a 'Copyright Edition'. These works is from the Tauchnitz 'Collection of British Authors' which started in 1842 and continued for almost a century. The collection eventually comprised of 5370 volumes. This collection is largely in a uniform full paper vellum binding, with beautiful and elaborate gilt detail to the boards and spine. 'New Italian Sketches' has been rebound in a half paper vellum binding with imitation green morocco over boards. This work however features the same gilt detail to the spine as the other volumes. In a full paper vellum binding, with beautiful and elaborate gilt detail to the boards and spine. 'New Italian Sketches' rebound in a half paper vellum binding with imitation green morocco over boards. Externally excellent, with slight discolouration and marking to boards, as expected with paper vellum binding. Minor shelfwear to extremities and slight rubbing to spines. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but bright and clean, with the odd slight spot to the occasional page. Very Good Indeed
