Description: 408pp. Octavo [19 cm] Blue cloth covered boards with gilt stamped titles. Good. The covers are slightly faded and rubbed, and the spine is subtly rolled. There is a crease in the spine. The spine and the fore edge of the rear cover have numerous very tiny light stains. The edges of the covers are gently bumped. The pages are very mildly browned. The hinges are a little weak. The text block is just beginning to crack at p. 171. No dust jacket. With a frontispiece by Norman Rockwell. This frontispiece is Norman Rockwell's first book appearance. This is the author's scarce third book. Published September, 1915, Code H-P.

Description: Very good minus, first edition book, no dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the FFEP. Navy cloth covered boards with gilt lettering and small illustration stamped on front panel within a shield-like shape. Spine is similarly stamped but it is rubbed almost beyond legibility. Boards are somewhat soiled and sunned overall; extremities are more sunned and heavily on spine. Edges at head and tail of spine are split and frayed. Approximately half of the cloth on the back panel is mottled. Lower fore-edge corner tips are rubbed through, the upper front fore-edge corner tip has a slight rub through. Other external board edges are lightly scuffed but not rubbed through. External page edges are age/soil-darkened. Previous owner's name plate on front paste-down. Text pages are age-toned. Several text pages (pp. 7-11) are smudged and stained - see photo. Pages 265 & 342 have turned-down corners. Pages 105-127 have small nicks along the lower edges, text is not affected. Pages 250-252 have small stains in the upper margin. Text block is mildly shaken but stable overall. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition description. Extremely scarce advance copy of this early Lewis novel, which has not appeared at auction in many years. Norman Rockwell frontis. Lewis's extremely elusive third book and only second novel under his own name. Although not a critical or popular success, The Trail of the Hawk provides important insight into Lewis's development as a writer, a craft he would later demonstrate his mastery of in such works as Babbitt, Main Street, and Elmer Gantry. Nearly Very Good, cloth mostly split along front spine edge, first few pages almost detached from text block, piece of scotch tape at top rear spine edge.
