A small octavo measuring 7 3/4" by 5 3/4" with the edges of the boards flexible boards tilted inward and with very light soiling to the front board. Without a dust jacket as existent copies are seldom seen. 93 pages of text illustrated with a color frontispiece and 60 drawings by the author/artist 7 of which are full page plates. There are no markings, gift inscriptions or book plates within this copy. The hinges and joints are tight and strong with all pages tight. Uncommon in such nice condition.

An early book by this writer who was one of America's most famous naturalists as well as being influential in the Boy Scout movement. A story of tracking and hunting the great stag, although at the end Yan is not able to kill such a beautiful creature. Illustrated with a colored frontispiece and seven other full-page illustrations, with small decorations or drawings on almost every page. It notes that "the designs for title-page, cover, and general make-up, and also literary revision, were done by Mrs. Grace Gallatin Seton-Thompson." 93 pp. (stated "First Impression. October 12,1899"). Very good in original light olive green pebbled cloth binding, with a small decoration of a stag, borders and titles in gilt on a green panel. Top edge gilt. Naturalist and wildlife artist Ernest Thompson Seton was one of the founding pioneers of the Boy Scouts of America, particularly the appropriation and incorporation of what he believed to be Native American elements into the traditions of the BSA. A prolific writer and artist, several of his works have been adapted for television and film including the 1989 to 1990 Japanese Seton Animal Chronicles.
