Price: US$102.50 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: States "Fifth printing, August 1935." (The first printing was May, 1935.) Blue topstain. Previous Owners' Names to FFE. NO dust jacket. Victor Fleming's 1942 film starred Spencer Tracy, John Garfield, and the incomparable Hedy Lamarr. (Leading man Garfield, born Jacob Garfinkle to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants in New York, reportedly replaced Anthony Quinn [Manuel Antonio Rodolfo Quinn Oaxaca, 1915-2001], who would have been the only major cast member of actual Mexican extraction. So pretty much the whole cast had to fake their Hispanic accents, which critics complained "came and went" from scene to scene. Lamarr, of course, was an Austrian Jew of Hungarian-Ukrainian parentage, infamous for her nude scenes in the German film "Ecstasy," who'd done well in "Algiers" and "White Cargo," but who chose poorly, here. To play Dolores "Sweets" Ramirez in "Tortilla Flats," she turned down the role of Ilsa Lund, in . . . "Casablanca." 317 pp. Reduced from $195.

Steinbeck, John. Tortilla Flat [3rd printing with DJ]. Covici Friede. New York, 1935.

Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Hardcover with DJ. Gray cloth with dark blue lettering. The original DJ is present, but flawed. DJ has been pasted to the book at the flaps, both front and back. It also appears to have been varnished for protection, so it is all tones of yellow and brown now, with blue and black. Tape repairs and edgeworn. Front flap says Third Printing, with price of $2.50. Early ownership name on front endpaper. NO date on title page. Copyright page dated July 1935, stated (and listed) third printing. 316 pages. This was Steinbeck's first successful novel, after The Red Pony, Cup of Gold and The Pastures of Heaven, none of which attracted much attention. This copy has an overall dusty feel to it, but its scarcity - particularly of the DJ - earns it a spot on the shelf. Please email with questions or to request photos.

John Steinbeck. Tortilla Flat. Covici Friede, 1935.

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: The true first edition, first printing of Steinbeck's first commercially successful novel and the beginning of his long association with Pascal Covici. Tight binding. Noticeable foxing to page edges, covers, and pages near the front and end of book. Wear and light fraying to heel of spine, minor wear elsewhere. The half title page has apparently been lost or torn out and a new half title tipped in. This page was placed with the wrong edge in and hence the "Tortilla Flat" wording faces the title page rather than the front of book. I have owned this book for many years and only recently noticed this issue when I was comparing with another first edition. A careful observation shows that the new half title page is slightly smaller than all the other pages in the book, probably transplanted from a reprint. Note we are talking about the half title and not the all-important title/copyright page, which is original. Despite this defect and the others listed, it is a true first edition, first printing and comes with a fine facsimile dust jacket.

Steinbeck, John; Gannett, Ruth. TORTILLA FLAT. Covici Friede Publishers, New York, 1935.

Price: US$7000.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of this oft-comical tale of post-World War I Monterey, following the exploits of a wine-loving and vaguely Arthurian group of paisanos, a beautiful copy in the scarce original dust jacket. The lighthearted tone of TORTILLA FLAT lifted the spirits of Americans during the Great Depression, for whom "reading and the movies were escape. escape from grinding poverty, escape from worrying about how to pay the rent, escape from worrying about how to find a job" (San Jose). Danny and his round table of friends are rarely concerned with any of those issues as they meander through life in Monterey, undeniably poor, but not experiencing the tragedy of poverty in the same way as many of Steinbeck's later characters. Steinbeck even drew joy from writing the work: "it is light and I think amusing. I don't care whether it amounts to anything. I am enjoying it and I need something to help me over this last ditch" (Steinbeck and Wallsten). TORTILLA FLAT did, of course, amount to something, earning the California Commonwealth Club's Gold Medal and a mention in the justification for Steinbeck's 1962 Nobel Prize. It was also made into a 1942 film starring Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr, and was one of the top box office grossers of the year. This first edition is a crystallization of the beginning of Steinbeck's career, before his works were required reading in classrooms across America. With Ruth Gannett's illustrations nestled throughout the text, TORTILLA FLAT is a refreshingly light title in a broad oeuvre. 7.5'' x 5''. Original tan cloth binding with blue spine lettering. Original unclipped ($2.50) pictorial dust jacket in blue and black. Blue topstain. Fore-edge machine deckle. Illustrated throughout in black and white. 318 pages. Housed in custom blue leather-backed clamshell box. Jacket with some edgewear, mild chipping to spine ends; spine sunned. Binding corners and spine ends lightly bumped, topstain a bit faded; tiny creases to lower margins of pages 316-318. A clean, sound copy. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.
