Description: Small quarto bound in dark green pebbled cloth with spine titles and rules stamped in gilt. 1896 date to the title page; no additional printings. 972 pages. Six months of the magazine in the publisher's binding. Complete in this volume is "Tom Sawyer, Detective" by Mark Twain, illustrated by A. B. Frost. The volume also includes Part II (only) of "Through Inland Waters", written and illustrated by Howard Pyle; "The Strange Days That Came to Jimmy Friday" and "The Blue Quail of the Cactus" written and illustrated by Frederic Remington; also two articles by future President of the United States Woodrow Wilson, "First in Peace" and "General Washington". The volume contains many more articles and stories of interest. The cloth shows only very light edgewear, with no splits or frays. The front hinge has started in a few spots, and the rear hinge has a crack, but both are holding with no mull showing (see photos). There is a short pencil notation to the front free endpaper and a former owner's name to the title page, otherwise the volume is unmarked. The publication of "Tom Sawyer, Detective" here precedes the book publication, making it the true first appearance of the story. Uncommon, especially in the publisher's binding.
