Twain, Mark. Tom Sawyer Abroad - First U.K. Edition. Chatto & Windus, London, 1894.

Price: US$295.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Good, plus. See scans and description. London: Chatto & Windus, 1894. First British Edition. With the pertinent points, 208 pp. + 32 pp ad catalog dated Feb.1894. 26 illustrations by Dan Beard. 12mo, red cloth with black cover and spine illustrations, black cover lettering, black and gilt spine lettering. Typical notable spine lean (about 15 degrees) and spine sunning, wear at top and bottom of spine, front corners touched, page edge soiling. Foxing is almost entirely absent; Good, plus a bit. Twain's fanciful extensions of the adventures begun in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer Abroad takes Tom, Huck and Jim across the Atlantic in a hot-air balloon [it was the era for that sort of adventuring in literature] and to the Sahara. Plenty of the slang and partially-educated twisted logical pontification we love to hear from Tom, in an adventure told as seen through Huck's eyes. L19n

Twain, Mark. Pudd'nhead Wilson: A Tale.. Chatto & Windus, London, 1894.

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Description: First English edition of Twain's classic tale of two mischievous twins, published several days before the first American edition. BAL 3441. Octavo, original publisher's pictorial cloth with gilt titles to the spine, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Twain by James Mapes Dodge and six illustration by Louis Loeb. From the library of William Safire with his bookplate to the pastedown. William Safire was an important American author, columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter. He joined Nixon’s campaign for the 1960 Presidential race, and supported him again in 1968. After Nixon’s 1968 victory, Safire served as a speechwriter for him and Spiro Agnew. He authored several political columns in addition to his weekly column “On Language” in The New York Times Magazine from 1979 until the month of his death and authored two books on grammar and linguistics: The New Language of Politics (1968) and what Zimmer called Safire’s “magnum opus,” Safire’s Political Dictionary. Safire later served as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1995 to 2004 and in 2006 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. In very good condition. “A major part of Twain’s Mississippi writings. It resembles Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in being set before the Civil War in a small Missouri town modeled on Hannibal. However, it has a much more somber tone. While it contains humor, it deals frankly with small-town prejudice, slavery, miscegenation, lost birthright, degenerate aristocratic values and distorted parental love” (Rasmussen, 372). “Includes a series of brilliant epigrams, each the headpiece of a chapter, which are distillations of Twain’s wit and wisdom” (Benet, 795).

Twain, Mark. TOM SAWYER ABROAD. , 1894.

Price: US$475.00 + shipping

Description: With 26 Illustrations by Dan Beard. London: Chatto & Windus, 1894. 32 pp ads dated Feb 1894. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First English Edition, apparently published one day after the American one (though this is far from certain). In this tale Tom, Huck and Jim travel about the world in a self-propelled balloon; Twain was trying to cash in on the popularity of Jules Verne (just as this book's sequel, TOM SAWYER DETECTIVE, would try to cash in on the popularity of Sherlock Holmes). This copy is in the primary (red pictorial) binding -- showing our heroes drifting by in their balloon while four lions jump up at them from the ground. It is unusually bright and clean -- near-fine (as usual the volume is a little aslant, and there are a few faint marks). In our experience this English edition is scarcer than the American. Blanck 3440 (note); McBride p. 163.
