Fielding, Henry; King, Alexander. TOM JONES. Limited Editions Club, New York, 1931.

Price: US$75.00 + shipping

Description: Limited Editions Club issue of Fielding's classic novel on human nature, one of 1500 copies signed by the artist. Originally published in 1749, TOM JONES has been an "incalculable influence" on the literature of "England, the United States and wherever English is written" (Yardley). An oft-humorous Bildungsroman set against the backdrop of the Jacobite Rising, the work was met with "shock and delight" by contemporary readers - sometimes with more "shock" than "delight" (Yardley). Henry Fielding's frank descriptions of the hypocrisy of the upper classes and his characters' sexual encounters caused some blustering; as Samuel Johnson lectured Hannah More: "I am shocked to hear you quote from so vicious a book. I am sorry to find you have read it: a confession which no modest lady should ever make. I scarcely know a more corrupt work" (quoted in Roberts 168-9). 10.75'' x 7''. Original limp grey calf with gilt tooled titles and designs to spine. Illustrated in black and red throughout. 870 pages. Signed by King to limitation page, numbered 1423 of 1500. Original red slipcase with title plate to spine. Toning to top and front of slipcase, with some light edgewear. Spine ends lightly bumped with shallow bits of loss to head; mild soiling to front board. Else sharp and tight. Very good plus in very good plus slipcase.
