Laid in is the front flap of the dustwrapper and a photograph of the author. When John St John joined the Royal Marines at the outbreak of war, he found on entering the mess that 'I was the youngest, and the eldest was thirty-six: a short, peppery-looking person called Evelyn Waugh . . . without knowing it I had also become a Halberdier'. Although the two men had little in common - the one a young radical, the other a nearly middle-age reactionary urging him to read 'The Tablet' - they formed a close wartime friendship. Together they shared the ordeals of basic training, the defence of the Cornish coast, and finally the aborted attack on Dakar. Waugh drew heavily upon this time in the Royal Marines when he came to write about the war, and John St John took part in many of the events that later appeared in 'Put Out More Flags' and the 'Sword of Honour' trilogy. Here the Waugh enthusiast will find the characters and events that inspired Ben Ritchie-Hook, Sergeant Cork, Kut-al-Imara House and many others. The book is illustrated with thirty two hilarious line drawings by Peter MacKarell, which brilliantly recapture the hectic early months of the war. They are the perfect match for John St John's witty and informative text. Ref AAA 1
