Hemingway, Ernest. To Have and Have Not. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1937.

Price: US$3250.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing. 1 vols. 8vo. Written sporadically between 1935 and 1937, and revised as he traveled back and forth from Spain during the Spanish Civil War, To Have and Have Not portrays Key West and Cuba in the 1930s, and provides a social commentary on that time and place. Hemingway biographer Jeffrey Meyers describes the novel as heavily influenced by the Marxist ideology Hemingway was exposed to by his support of the Republican faction in the Spanish Civil War while he was writing it. The novel had its origins in two short stories published earlier in periodicals by Hemingway ("One Trip Across" and "The Tradesman's Return") which make up the opening chapters, and a novella, written later, which makes up about two-thirds of the book. The narrative is told from multiple viewpoints, at different times, by different characters, and the characters' names are frequently supplied under the chapter headings to indicate who is narrating that chapter. Basis for the class 1944 movie with Bogart and Bacall, and screenplay by William Faulkner. Black cloth in dust jacket. Some light chipping to head and tail of spine

His life is a lonely struggle to keep himself, his wife, and daughters away from the edge of the "have not" category.’ Now RARE in the original dustjacket in such fine condition.

Ernest Hemingway. To Have And Have Not by Ernest Hemingway, First Edition, 1937. Charles Scriber’s Sons, 1937.

Condition: Fine

Description: Hemingway, Ernest, To Have and Have Not. New York: Charles Scriber’s Sons, 1937. First edition, first printing. Beautifully rebound in 1/4 gray Moroccan leather and cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt tooling and titles to the spine. Housed in a matching cloth slipcase. This first edition, first printing of Ernest Hemingway’s To Have and Have Not was published in New York by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1937. The original internal pages have been professionally rebound in quarter gray Moroccan leather and cloth boards with raised bands, gilt titles, and gilt tooling to the spine. The book is housed in a custom matching archival slipcase. Set during the Depression, Hemingway’s novel follows the dramatic story of fishing boat captain Henry Morgan who turns to a life of contraband running between Cuba and Florida to save himself and his family. To Have and Have Not began as a short story, published as "One Trip Across" in Cosmopolitan in 1934, introducing the character of Harry Morgan. A second story, "The Tradesman's Return," was written and published in Esquire in 1936, at which point Hemingway decided to write a full novel about Harry Morgan. Hemingway wrote the book and revised it between 1935 and 1937, as he traveled back and forth from Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Critical of American capitalism, the novel explores social circumstances and situations in Key West and Cuba, “that paradise of the ‘haves’ and purgatory of the ‘have nots.” To Have and Have Not was first published by Charles Scribner's Sons on October 15, 1937 to a print-run of approximately 10,000 copies. It was also published as an "Armed Services Edition" during WWII. Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American author and journalist. His distinctive writing style, characterized by economy of words and dry understatement, strongly influenced 20th-century fiction, as did his life of adventure and his public image. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. CONDITION: Very good condition. His adventures lead him into the world of the wealthy and dissipated yachtsmen who swarm the region, and involve him in a strange and unlikely love affair. In this harshly realistic, yet oddly tender and wise novel, Hemingway perceptively delineates the personal struggles of both the "haves" and the "have nots" and creates one of the most subtle and moving portraits of a love affair in his oeuvre. In turn, funny and tragic, lively and poetic, remarkable in its emotional impact, and takes literary high adventure to a new level.
