Description: Hardcover. Good. No Dj. 1st Edition 1st Issue. John Lane, NY, 1914. Gilt lettering is clean, but heather blue textured cloth with Art Nouveau design in dark blue on the cover shows two dime sized spots on front, the rear shows some soiling, fraying at head of spine at hinge. Text block is bright clean, binding is square, tight, pages flow freely. No markings save library markings from the Poland Spring Maine Library, which includes an embossed stamp on title page.The second volume in Dreiser's epic trilogy of big city American business and politics which follows the rise, fall, and rise again of the driven and unscrupulous broker Frank Algernon Cowperwood, a fictional account based on the career of Charles Yerkes, financial genius who engineered the construction of the Chicago Loop and the British Subway System in this condition, an internally bright and clean, very good copy.

Description: First edition of the second book in the author's acclaimed Trilogy of Desire. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For George T. Keating my most American book Theodore Dreiser N.Y. City 1919." The recipient George Keating was a well-known book collector in the early twentieth century, who amassed a large Joseph Conrad collection. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing and offsetting to the endpapers. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell case. "Dreiser "relied on his own energetic research into the life of his model, the street-railway magnate Charles Tyson Yerkes. [Through] the fictional Frank Cowperwood The Titan details Cowperwood-Yerkes’s stock and street-railway manipulations in Chicago and his long series of sexual conquests. Harper’s, after having printed and advertised the novel, backed out of publishing it, and Dreiser had to find another publisher" (DAB 3, 236).
