Condition: Very Good

Description: Frontis, [6], 299, [1] pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Cover has slight wear and soiling. This second volume of this classic study covers operations on the ocean in 1814, operations on the Great Lakes in 1814, operations in 1815, and the Battle of New Orleans. The Battle of New Orleans was a series of engagements fought between December 14, 1814 and January 18, 1815, constituting the last major battle of the War of 1812. American combatants, commanded by Major General Andrew Jackson, prevented a much larger British force, commanded by Admiral Alexander Cochrane and General Edward Pakenham, from seizing New Orleans and the territory of the Louisiana Purchase. The Treaty of Ghent had been signed on December 24, 1814, and hostilities continued without the involved parties knowing about the Treaty, until January 18 by which time all of the British forces had retreated, putting an end to the Battle of New Orleans. This was volume Ten of the Statesman Edition. This edition was published with the permission of the President through special arrangement with The Century Co., Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons and G. P. Putnam's Sons. The Review of Reviews was a noted family of monthly journals founded in 1890-1893 by British reform journalist William Thomas Stead (1849-1912). Established across three continents in London (1891), New York (1892) and Melbourne (1893), the Review of Reviews, American Review of Reviews and Australasian Review of Reviews represented Stead's dream of a global publishing empire. The American Review of Reviews was edited by the American academic, journalist, and reformer, Albert Shaw. Shaw was part of the first generation of academic reformers, which included Woodrow Wilson (who was his classmate at Johns Hopkins University).

Description: Large Octavo. A BEAUTIFUL 1914 1st Edition of this classic Roosevelt South American memoir. Photogravure frontispiece of Roosevelt and Colonel Rondon. Profusely illustrated with photographs by Kermit Roosevelt. Large fold-out map at the end rear of book. "After failing to win a third term in the elections of 1912, former U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt planned a speaking trip to Argentina and Brazil and a cruise up the Amazon. The government of Brazil suggested that Roosevelt join the famous Brazilian explorer C?ndido Rondon in an expedition down the recently discovered River of Doubt. Roosevelt accepted the invitation and, accompanied by his son Kermit, reached the river with Rondon on February 27, 1914. "From the beginning, the expedition was fraught with difficulties, including disease, lack of supplies, and hostility from the local tribes. Roosevelt nearly died from an infected wound. This work is his account of the expedition, which despite its problems, managed to map parts of the river and to discover several previously unknown species of animals and plants. The River of Doubt is now called Rio Roosevelt." - Library of Congress Brown cloth with titling in gilt to front and spine. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Spine lightly sunned. Rear hinge starting. Overall a lovely edition.

Price: US$705.47 + shipping

Description: FIRST EDITION. Slightly toned but a good copy; pp. xiv, [2], 383, frontispiece, plates, three maps (one folding); untrimmed in full publisher's brown cloth, lettered gold; spine sunned but a good copy; book label at front flyleaf. The account of Roosevelt's expedition into the Brazilian jungle in 1913 as a member of the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition, co-named after its leader, Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon. The expedition was intended to discover if the Rio da Dúvida ('River of Doubt'), flowed into the Amazon. During the expedition Roosevelt lost 23 kilos, and felt the effects of the bullet which remained lodged in his chest following the 1912 attempt on his life. He then suffered a leg wound which festered and gave him tropical fever. He planned to commit suicide in order to preserve the expedition, but after entreaties by his son was convinced to continue. Ultimately the expedition was successful and the river was renamed Rio Roosevelt, sometimes Rio Teodoro, in his honour.
