Pictorial green gilt-stamped cloth shows wear, expecially at extremities; vol. 2 has a 1-inch piece missing at top of spine. Folding map at back of vol. 1 is missing; map at back of vol. 2 has tears at the folds and is delicate, but intact. Overall a good+ copy, protected in polyfilm.

Description: This book is a copy of the second volume. Very early printing, first year. Bound in a deep green with faded gilt lettering on spine and front cover. Detailed embossed and tinted wrap illustration covers spine and both boards. Light rubbing and wear. Spill mark head of spine and front board near hinge, showing on early leaves. Very large and heavy, all corners are bumped - most board showing bottom corners. Paper of front gutter has parted, but still solid. Back cover gutter has completely seperated showing interior of spine. Material pocket inside back board contains folded map. This map has worn at creases with some holes and will need to be handled with care. It shows mostly the rivers, and a lot of white space. There is also a multi-fold map attached to the text between 326 &327. Frontis portrait retains protective tissue, as do most of the full page illustrations. Text has slightly yellowed with age, but clean and complete. Binding is beginning to loosen and it will need to be handled with care. Due to the size and weight of this book, it will require additional shipping. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Woodcut frontispiece portraits with tissue guards. Illustrated with 10 colored maps (some folding) and 150 text woodcuts (some full-page). Housed in each volume's rear pocket is a large, colored folding map (intact but with some age-related separations at creases & folds). Blank margin of one text folding map in Vol. 2 chipped where it once extended beyond the text block (no loss to the map). Front cover of Vol. 1 very slightly bowed. Corners slightly bumped & lightly frayed. An ex-library set with library bookplates on front pastedowns, faint round embossed library stamp on titles, library rubber stamp on versos of title. There are also library pockets on rear pastedowns, and white ink call letters at foot of spines. Stanley's expedition was the largest African expedition ever, controversial and at the same time the most celebrated Africa expedition of the 19th century, exploring and mapping the central African lakes and rivers. Known for finding the missing missionary and explorer David Livingstone's and credited with dispelling notion that the Lualaba was the source of the Nile. "Sir Henry Rawlinson, president of the Royal Geographic Society, said that it was not Stanley who had discovered Livingstone, but Livingstone who had discovered Stanley; and some of the newspapers threw doubts upon the authenticity of the whole story of the expedition, and found 'something mysterious and inexplicable' in it's leader's narrative." In two volumes. 522 and 566pp. (2) pp. ads, Engraved frontispieces, illustrated with 10 maps some folding including the two large folding maps in rear pocket of each volume, and 150 woodcuts. This was one of Stanley's most important expeditions. He recounts the incredibly difficult and perilous journey during which he explored the great lakes of Central Africa, confirming their size and position, searched for the sources of the Nile, and traced the unknown Congo River. He and all his men who helped make this journey came across not only dangerous animals but Cannibals and disease. A beautiful set bound in a full wrap around jungle view in green pictorial cloth accented in red and gilt, lettering gilt, dark brown coated endpapers, light wear through to corners, spine ends and joints lightly rubbed, hinges fine. An exceptionally nice set with no names, bookplates, or foxing.

Description: First US edition, later issue(?) 2 vols. With 10 maps (folding ones present in rear pockets) and 150 woodcuts. 8vo. Publisher's original decorative dark green cloth, pictorial front boards depicting Stanley arriving with party in a row boat, gilt lettering and red highlighting still bright, general light rubbing to extremities but this very minimal, bindings still tight showing little weakness, clean internally, folding maps appear little used, a one-inch tear to front endpaper of second volume, plus light ink ownership stamps, otherwise a beautiful square set. Possibly a second issue as the title pages dated the year after original publication (1878). Stanley's original classic account of the mission to meet up with Livingstone. xiv, 522 [map]; ix, 566, [2 ads] [maps]pp. Heavy volumes, will cost extra to ship/post.
