Numerous illustrations and maps throughout, including 34 full page plates and two very large folding maps in rear pockets of each volume. Thick 8vo, publisher’s original forest green cloth pictorially decorated in an overall elaborate design incorporating vibrant colours and gilt, spines similarly decorated and blocked. xiv, 522; ix, 566 pp. A reading set, the volumes have some age wear to the tips and edges, inner hinges of Vol. I separated, some stains from water to a few of the preliminary leaves of Vol. I, some staining from water to the upper quadrant of the text-block in Vol. II, some internal wear, the large folding maps in quite good order with a bit of the usual splitting at the folds but generally speaking, very well preserved, clean and probably never unfolded. The cloth is still rather clean and handsome, the gilt and red decorations stand well, a handsome set for the shelf still and in spite of the internal issues. ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS IN THE AFRICAN OEUVRE. FIRST EDITION AMERICAN ISSUE. After the death of Livingstone, Stanley resolved to return to Africa and finish his work, and also to resolve some of the problems introduced by Burton and Speke. Livingstone had considered it his mission to finish mapping and studying Central Africa, resolve some of the questions about the source of the Nile and to report on the doings of the slave traders, a practice that Livingstone spoke actively against. Criticized even at the time for what many considered his harsh treatment of the native peoples, Stanley did manage to finish what Livingstone had started and open up Central Africa to the west. When Stanley made his first journey, he was one of a very few white people on the entire continent. Within the twenty years which elapsed after Stanley’s first journey, the continent was being viewed as a commercial, political, and strategic destiny by many of the countries in Europe. A very elusive title now.

Stanley, Henry M.. Through the Dark Continent: Or the Sources of the Nile Around the Great Lakes of Equatorial Africa and Down the Livingstone River to the Atlantic Ocean Two Volumes. Harper & Brothers, New York, 1878.

Price: US$400.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Hardcover. First edition of this stirring and extensive account of Henry Stanley's first trans-Africa expedition in 1874-1877 while searching for the sources of the Nile and the Congo Rivers. He succeeded in identifying the source of the Congo River but did not locate the source of the Nile River. Stanley (1841 - 1904) was a Welsh-American explorer, journalist, soldier, colonial administrator, author and politician who was famous for his exploration of Central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Besides his discovery of Livingstone, he is mainly known for his search for the sources of the Nile and Congo rivers, the work he undertook as an agent of King Leopold II of the Belgians which enabled the occupation of the Congo Basin region. More than a century after his death, Stanley's legacy remains the subject of enduring controversy. Although he personally had high regard for many of the native African people who accompanied him on his expeditions, the exaggerated accounts of corporal punishment and brutality in his books fostered a public reputation as a hard-driving, cruel leader. In the 20th century, his reputation was also seriously damaged by his role in establishing the Congo Free State for King Leopold II. Nevertheless, he is recognized for his important contributions to Western knowledge of the geography of Central Africa and for his resolute opposition to the slave trade in East Africa. [Wikipedia] The two volumes are bound in dark green cloth with striking pictorial covers in black, green, orange and gilt showing Stanley in his boat navigating a river. Gilt titling to spines and front covers. Cloth is worn along cover edges and spine with slight tear to bottom of the joint on Volume one and a small split along the top of the front cover on Volume two. Bumping to corners. Interior hinges are cracked but text blocks remain tight and firm. Dark brown endpapers. Text pages show light aging but are otherwise clean and bright. There is a small tear to the bottom of a page of the table of contents in Volume two. Gift inscription on free endpaper in Volume one dated 1878. Volume two has additional interesting information in an appendix, including a comparative table of African languages; altitudes of important positions; a list of deaths occurring during the expedition; a list of survivors; and a table showing the "wanderings" in Africa. The volumes include 150 illustrations and ten maps. The full page illustrations are protected by tissue guards. Two of the ten maps are large folding maps held inside sleeves on the rear pastedowns. The map in volume one is present but in pieces and is partially missing. The map in volume two has tears along some of the folds and some creasing. Still a desirable copy of this exploration classic in very good condition. Octavo. Volume One: xiv, 522 pages; Volume Two: ix, 566 pages including index. TRAV/062323.

Perhaps best known as the intrepid adventurer who located the missing explorer David Livingstone in equatorial Africa in 1871, Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) played a major role in assembling the fragmented discoveries and uncertain geographical knowledge of central Africa into a coherent picture. He was the first European to explore the Congo River; assisted at the founding of the Congo Free State, and helped pave the way for the opening of modern Africa. In this classic account of one of his most important expeditions, the venerable Victorian recounts the incredibly difficult and perilous journey during which he explored the great lakes of Central Africa, confirming their size and position, searched for the sources of the Nile, and traced the unknown Congo River from the depths of the continent to the sea. A very handsome set bound in 3/4 brown morocco over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands with compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, all edge marbled with matching endpapers. Marbled covered boards of volume two have faded.

STANLEY, Henry Morton. Through the Dark Continent. Or The Sources of the Nile Around the Great Lakes of Equatorial Africa and Down the Livingstone River to the Atlantic Ocean.. New York Harper and Brothers Publishers 1878, 1878.

Price: US$833.74 + shipping

Description: First US edition, first published in the UK earlier the same year. 8vo., 2 volumes. Original dark green cloth with wraparound pictorial design in red, black, and gilt, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, brown coated endpapers. Portrait frontispiece in each volume and 32 plates, 10 maps in all, one double-page and 3 folding, the 2 larger folding coloured maps in end pockets of each volume, numerous wood-engravings to the text, many full-page. When the news of Livingstone's death reached him in 1874 Stanley wrote that he hoped to be selected to continue Livingstone's work in opening up Africa to the shining light of Christianity. His hopes were fulfilled with his next expedition in which he crossed central Africa from coast to coast, determining the connections between Lakes Nyanza and Tanganyika, laying the foundations of the Christian missions and following the curve of the Congo to the shores of the Atlantic. Stanley's description of this journey, as found here, was the first account to actually prove the source of the Nile. Although Speke correctly claimed in 1858 that Lake Victoria was the true source of the river, it took Stanley's circumnavigation of the Lake to establish it conclusively.

Price: US$1122.34 + shipping

Description: First US edition, this copy in notably attractive condition. Stanley's controversial Trans-African Expedition of 1874-7 claimed it had succeeded in "solving the remaining mysteries of African geography" (ODNB). Exploring equatorial Africa and, in particular, the Great Lakes regions, Stanley finally dispelled Livingstone's notion that the "Lualaba was the source of the Nile and vindicated Speke's claim that the lake seen on his expedition with Burton was indeed one of the sources" (Howgego). While this brought Stanley great acclaim, it was tempered by criticism of the militarisation of his expedition, and the considerable loss of life. Following Samuel Baker's lead, the Trans-African Expedition involved "the show and sometimes use of military-like force to counteract local opposition" (Newman, p. xix). Through the Dark Continent was first published in the UK earlier the same year. Howgego IV S59; Mendelssohn IV, p. 379. James L. Newman, Imperial Footprints: Henry Morton Stanley's African Journeys, 2004. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark green cloth with wraparound pictorial design in red, black, and gilt, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, brown coated endpapers.
