Original quarter red cloth with grey boards. Printed paper spine label. Lacking dust jacket. 99, [1] pages followed by publishers' advertisements. Though no provenance markings, this copy from the library of noted actor and Sherlockian Curtis Armstrong. Edgewear and light bumping to corners, minor edge soil. Faint foxing to interior. Offsetting to endpapers.

Description: First edition thus. 8vo. 188pp. Blue cloth with gold lettering to the spine and gilt-stamped lettering, borders and decorations to the upper board. Frontispiece illustration by Philip Simmonds. Backstrip ends and corner tips a little rubbed, with a little give to the binding and indications of careful plate or sticker removal from the upper board. Free endpapers very lightly toned. A nice crisp copy of this uncommon edition produced for use in schools. A two-page preface accredited to 'R.B.L.' and 'R.B.M.' precedes the stories 'The Red-Headed League', 'The Five Orange Pips', 'The Blue Carbuncle', 'The Speckled Band', 'The Reigate Squires' and 'The Final Problem', followed by a four-page glossary and twenty questions about the stories plus three further general questions about Holmes. Three of them is a series of five short stories that were first published in The Strand Magazine from April to December 1918. On 2nd November 1923, John Murray added two other short stories Billy Bones (1922) and The Forbidden Subject (1923) to the five, making a total of seven, with an introduction written by Doyle.
