Condition: Very Good

Description: John Dos Passos an American Writer whose book Three soldiers remains a classic in the WWI realist war genre. This novel is the authors first artistic landmark. In this anti-war novel Dos Passos introduces his signature satirical voice as he documents the de humanizing effects of militarization. The three soldiers in the novel endure long waits in the trenches followed by heart stopping firefights filled with poison gas.The merger of the most ancient form of warfare, the frontal assault merged with the modern technology of war, machine guns airplane's, grenades and Mustard Gas, assures mutual destruction. Each soldier protagonist hails from a different geographic section and social region of America and Dos Passos is careful to get the dialects correct. F Scott Fitzgerald calls the novel " the first war book by an American author worth taking notice of". Book is very good, solid, square and unmarked except for the former owners signature on the First Free end paper dated 1922. This is a wonderful collectible and a great addition to any serious library. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall 2nd Printing

It is one of the key American war novels of the First World War, and remains a classic of the realist war novel genre. The disillusionment John Dos Passos felt for the Great War forms the core of THREE SOLDIERS, which stands as a denunciation of the military and its exploitation of young men. The novel chronicles the wartime experiences of a trio of American privates from different backgrounds: Andrews, a gifted musician and Harvard graduate from New York; Fuselli, a store clerk who hopes to impress a girl back home in San Francisco; and Chrisfield, an easygoing farm boy from Indiana. Recognized as a masterpiece when first published more than seventy-five years ago, THREE SOLDIERS still stands as a testament to the dehumanizing effects of war.
