Description: Hardcover. Number 28 of 310 copies. The Bird & Bull Press was one of America's oldest private presses, started in 1958 by Henry Morris - who describes a private press as "someone who prints books or ephemera related to his personal interests." By starting the press Morris was hoping to "make use of the product of a new hobby - hand paper-making." Many of the books published by Bird & Bull dealt with book related subjects, such as paper-making, printing, illustration, book binding, and typography. Henry Morris and his press thus played an important role in the study, preservation, and dissemination of printing history. In 2013, Morris announced that he was ending his press's 55 years of activity due to advanced age and difficulty finding exciting projects. An interesting book from the press on the history of marbling paper and its role in the production of decorated paper in the Near East, Europe, and the New World. The craft was carried on extensively in Europe from early in the 17th century. Most notably, this volume includes thirteen original marbled samples provided by Wolfe. Each sample gives the name of its pattern and when it was mainly used. There is light offsetting from the samples to the blank versos of each sample page. Bound in multicolored marbled paper covers with black leather spine with orange title label. Printed in Cochin types on damped handmade Umbria paper and bound by Gray Parrot. In near fine condition. Measures 7 x 10 inches. 81 pages plus paper samples and two pages of notes on the text. PRI/031524.

Description: 106, [1] pages. Copy 264 of a limited edition of 310. Hand-printed by Henry Morris at his Bird & Bull Press on Umbria handmade paper (Heaney A43). The three accounts, all translated by Wolf, are: For the Making of Marbled Paper, Called Turkish Paper, from a 1642 unpublished manuscript from Lyon, containing the earliest known French marbling recipe; The Best Method of Making Marbled Paper, published in the Journal Oeconomique, 1758; and The Marbler of Paper, an essay in the Diderot-d'Alembert Encyclopedie of 1765. The Diderot article is especially interesting as it comments on the practical side of marbling and how much money could be made. Printed on dampened Umbria handmade paper and bound by E. Gray Parrot in quarter green morocco, with leather spine label, and "snail" pattern marbled paper sides made by Wolfe especially for this edition. The 12 tipped in samples were produced by Wolfe using the instructions in the translated manuals. Included is a four-color sequence showing the various steps taken by Wolfe in producing the Placard pattern. (Henry Morris notes the paper for this book cost only $2000 more than his first 3-bedroom house.) With an Introduction and thirteen original marbled specimens by Richard J. Wolfe. Also, one tipped in photograph, showing the making of marbled paper; two tipped in tinted plates; seven pages in facsimile; and four plates, taken from the Encyclopaedie, showing papermaking and its tools. Quarter green morocco over marbled boards, orange morocco spine label. In original Mylar jacket. Richard Wolfe is well known for his long association with marbling, both as historian and practicing marbles.
