Small text drawings in the style of Bewick. Title page elaborately decorated with a border of a fox hiding in leaves and hunters and hounds. Text foxed. Uncut. Lacks fly leaves. Bookplate of William Hoskins on front paste down. 240mm. Original paper boards, spine perished. Boards detached. This perhaps should best be considered a candidate for rebinding. Sir Peter Beckford (1740-1811), was an English peer famous as huntsman (as well as a miscellaneous writer), and the patron of the well-known Classical composer, pianist Muzio Clementi. Description: In good condition. Boards are moderately worn with dryness and scuffing along edges, hinges and spine extremes. Small scratches to surface of boards with minor discoloration. Gilt finishing remains bright and intact. Spine darkened with uneven staining to label. Interior lightly toned with moderate foxing to first few leaves. Interior otherwise is minimally foxed and free of markings. Fold-out map is in good, working order. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. Description: 8vo., (8 4/8 x 5 4/8 inches). Half-title, 10-page publisher's advertisement at the end. Engraved frontispiece, title-page with wood-engraved border, folding engraved plate of a dog kennel, and extra-illustrated with 12 engraved plates of hunting scenes published by Joseph Rogerson in 1840 and 1842 (browned and spotted throughout). 20th-century black morocco, gilt, crimson silk lined doublures and endpapers, all edges gilt hiding a magnificent double fore-edge painting of fox-hunting scenes. Provenance: with the engraved armorial bookplates of John Henry Jaffray, William Edmund Jaffray and William Jaffray on the verso of the front free endpaper and the recto of the first blank. DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING Later edition, first published in 1781. An attractive copy with two fine fore-edge paintings showing fox-hunting. Beckford, a renowned breeder of Harriers (dogs specifically trained to hunt hares, but also used to hunt foxes). His works on hunting were "remarkable because they detailed the grubby nitty-gritty of animal husbandry in a light, eloquent prose. Clearly an expert in every aspect of managing hunting animals, Beckford offered detailed advice on all aspects of animal welfare, specializing at various periods in the breeding of harriers, foxhounds, and buck-hounds" (Adrian N.
