Description: BAL (1683) first state with "veielo" on page 213, line 5, binding A. Laid in is a small card SIGNED by William Cullen Bryant and dated October 21st, 1872. The volume is bumped at the corners with the boards exposed, spine ends are worn chipped and fraying, and there is a 3/4" tear to the cloth on the top front joint. A large bookplate dresses up the front pastedown and the bottom corner of the front endpaper is double creased. Text is clean with tight binding.

The recipient was presumably the spouse of the prominent attorney, and therefore the sister-in-law of Cyrus Field, who was responsible for the first Atlantic cable.
