FLINT, William Russell (illus.).. Theocritus, Bion and Moschus. Rendered into English prose by Andrew Lang.. London: The Medici Society, 1922, 1922.

Price: US$1601.08 + shipping

Description: First Flint edition, deluxe issue, number 248 of 500 copies printed on handmade paper; there were also 12 copies printed on vellum. William Russell Flint's vivid style is particularly suited to evoking the worlds of Ancient Greek idyllic and pastoral poetry. This edition was translated by Andrew Lang (1844-1912), a classicist and anthropologist best known for his writings on folklore and mythology. In his translations, "his virtuosity clamoured for expression, and works of apparently effortless expertise flowed from his pen" (ODNB). As noted by Gardner, "The Greek world of poetic escapism was typified by the idyllic scenes of nymphs and shepherds romping in summer fields to the sound of pan-pipes. The great exponent of this type of poetry was Theocritus whose traditions were carried on by Bion and Moschus. The work for [Philip] Lee Warner's book was completed in 1913 but it was not to be until 1922 that the two-volume work was to appear under the Medici Banner". Keith S. Gardner, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Unsigned Limited Edition Works of Sir William Russell Flint, 1994, p. 117; Ransom, p. 395. 2 volumes, quarto (265 x 195 mm). Contemporary blue morocco, spine with raised bands, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, covers lettered in gilt, decorated endpapers. Colour frontispieces, 18 colour plates, with captioned tissue guards, all by Flint. Some minor surface marks to binding, occasional foxing: a near-fine set.
