Price: US$160.35 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: A Good+, early edition, in larger format than the usual Beatrix Potter titles. The year 1905 appears on the title-verso-page. This edition features the later end-paper design featuring a pie and a patty-pan. The cover picture is still a cat in a small circle and in every respect, other than these details, is identical to the first printing of the first edition; large format (180mm x 140mm), 9 colour plates, 21 vignettes in black and white. Slight discolouration to front board, spine worn with partial loss to ends, full title still intact, binding a little shaky with cracking (webbing showing) in several places though sound and with no loose pages. Some discolouration to the last three, page edges from colour bleeding from boards (see additional photos), no other evidence of damp. Mild spotting, occasional grubbiness though mostly remarkable clean. Free from previous owner’s names or marking. Overall, a presentable, unrestored copy.

POTTER, Beatrix. The Pie and the Patty-Pan - very good early edition. Frederick Warne & Co., London, 1905.

Price: US$224.48 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A well preserved early printing of this classic, Although the date 1905 is given on the reverse of the title page it is not a first edition from that year as the first issue had a smaller circular onlay of a cat towards the top of the front cover. A neat inscription on the half-title is dated 1911, so it is from somewhere between 1905 and 1911. The complete 48-page text is in very good, tight, clean condition. Attractive lilac-decorated end papers lightly age-browned. The binding is near very good and firm, with only light wear to the extremities and slight fading. Delightful coloured illustrations and line drawings by the author. See photographs of this copy attached. (H-C)

POTTER, Beatrix. The Pie and the Patty-pan. New York: Frederick Warne and Co., [1905], 1905.

Price: US$725.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: A first edition of "The Pie and the Patty-pan" a children's story about a cat named Ribby and a Pomeranian dog named Duchess, was written by Beatrix Potter in 1903 but illustrated only in 1905. The illustrations depict the cottages and gardens of Sawrey, a village in the Lake District near Potter's Hill Top farm. Despite the rural setting, it is a story of a Victorian-style tea party and its codes of etiquette, reflecting Potter's observations of small village social life. Beatrix considered the illustrations of "The Pie and the Patty-pan" her second favorite among all her numerous publications. Therefore, "The Pie" was published in an enlarged size as part of the Peter the Rabbit series. Text in English. 18,2x14cm. 51pp. 10 colour plates and 21 b&w images in text. Original red cardboard wrappers with a medallion design. Mottled lavender endpapers foxed. Near fine condition.

Condition: Very Good

Description: Edmund Evans, The Racquet Court Press, Swan Street, London S.E., [printer.] First edition, Hofer variant boards. 12mo (7 1/8" x 5 ½"); 51 [1]pp; brownish maroon boards, stamped-white border and title, color portrait of a cat onlaid to front within a white-stamped frame; mottled lavender endpapers; partial bookseller's ticket to foot of rear pastedown; gift inscription to half-title dated 1905; frontispiece plus 9 color plates, 21 vignettes in b&w; light spotting and rubbing to boards, ½" crack to foot front hinge, some finger marks; very good. Quimby No. 9 (Hofer). Linder. The first of Beatrix Potter's books to be published in this larger format in order to increase the size of the illustrations. From 1930 and on, the book was published in the smaller format to bring it into size with the other Potter books. Rushing into publication, Potter had no pictorial endpapers ready, so early editions are bound with the mottled lavender. The story scene is set in Sawrey, the village that she loved, and many of the illustration backgrounds were sketches of nearby homes. A lovely story about a cat named Ribby and a dog named Duchess.

POTTER, Beatrix.. The Pie and the Patty-Pan. IN VERY SCARCE ORIGINAL GLASSINE WRAPPER.. , 1905.

Price: US$4489.67 + shipping

Description: Frederick Warne and Co. First edition, first impression, the blue variant binding with round pictorial inlay to upper board. In very scarce printed glassine wrapper that has ONE SHILLING NET near the foot of the front panel, with lists of Warne publications to both flaps plus 6 Peter Rabbit Books listed to rear cover, the last being "New Book for 1905. The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle." 10 coloured plates and line drawings to text. The first of Potter's works to be published in a large format and the details of her engaging watercolours are even more enjoyable on this scale. The colour plates are printed on one side of the quality paper; the other side is blank. There is a small crease to the top of page 7 and some sl. browning to both front and rear free endpapers. There is a scant portion of light foxing at the top of the centre fold. A light water stain covers a small triangle portion (4x2cm) to the front cover by the foot of the spine. This stain travels more lightly across the tail of the spine and bottom sixth of the back cover. There is the slightest corresponding rippling to the base of the rear panel of the glassine wrapper. There is a couple of small pieces of the wrapper missing to the tail of the spine and along the top edge of the rear panel there are a couple of pieces missing by the top of the rear flap alongside an open 3cm tear. There is creasing to the front panel of the wrapper. The book is surprisingly fresh and clean and has an unread aspect to it which is unusual for an early first edition of Potter. Postage may be higher than that stated as this book needs to be transported by courier.

Price: US$5772.43 + shipping

Description: Frederick Warne and Co. First edition, first impression, the red variant binding with round pictorial inlay to upper board. There is occasional very light foxing to a few pages. The lower edge of the boards are very slightly faded. Apart from less then 5mm missing at the head of spine the wrapper is complete and uncreased. The book is unusually fresh and clean and has an unread aspect to it which is unusual for an early first edition of Potter.
