Description: [vi], vi, [ii], ccxxv, 410; [iv], 535, [2]; [iv], 544, [1] pp.; illustrated; half-titles; 8vo; later tan polished calf over boards, four raised bands, gilt titles on spines, marbled endpapers, speckled text block edges. Thirty-seven of 38 plates called for are present; the Presentation in the Temple plate, not ready at publication and included in only a few copies is, as is the case in most copies, not present here. With numerous prints, linecuts, woodcuts and engravings printed within the text. "From the information which it contains, and the splendor of the decorations and printing, it will ever be considered as a model of excellence and good taste in typography and the arts" (Lowndes, p. 580). "It is perhaps the most lavish of all Dibdin's works and the best printed" (Jackson, p. 31). An attractive, pleasing set. Bindings are tight and solid and handled with ease. Small abrasions and rubbing to a few corners; spines a touch faded; light-toned foxing/spotting, mostly in vols. I and II; three plates in vol. Description: Complete with errata, colophon, and half-titles. With 40 plates, including the oft missing "Presentation in the Temple" in Volume I, portraits, illustrations and facsimiles, engraved vignettes, woodcut and text illustrations (some printed on India paper and mounted). Contemporary full crimson crushed levant morocco bound by St. James' Duke Street, London, a dated binding with the elaborate gilt spine in 6 compartments and "London, 1827" in gilt at the foot. From the library of Thomas Willement (1786-1871), British stained glass artist, called "the father of Victorian Stained Glass," with his signature, a small circular binders label and his personal bookplate from the Society of London Antiquaries. A handsome copy with an important provenance.
