Description: A beautiful, complete, numbered (limited edition), finely bound and autographed set, The Works of Thomas Bailey Aldrich. The set includes his classic works, such as The Story of a Bad Boy. Each book is numbered 225 of 250. Aldrich's autograph is bound into volume one, with matching numbering; "autograph copy no. 225". About the Author - Thomas Bailey Aldrich (1836 1907) was an American writer, poet, critic, and editor. He is notable for his long editorship of The Atlantic Monthly. He is also known for his semi-autobiographical book The Story of a Bad Boy, which established the "bad boy's book" subgenre in nineteenth-century American literature, and for his poetry, which included "The Unguarded Gates". Physical Attributes - Each volume measures 22.5 x 15 x 2.75 cm. Together they are 25 cm wide (shelf space). Beautiful 3/4 leather fine bindings; the paper is framed by double fillet of gilt. The spines have five raised bands, with compartments; four compartments are framed in fillet with sprays of leaves in the corners; two of the compartments have the name, volume, and works within in gilt. Every volumes sports beautiful marbled endpapers and handsome, wide margins. Top edges are gilt. Each volume includes a ribbon. A very attractive and well executed set. Condition - See pictures. A little fading at edges and spine. Light shelf wear with an occasional rub, and worn edge/corner. Overall the bindings are still quite handsome and clean. No writing or ownership marks/plates/etc. Many unopened pages. Occasional thumbing in Vol 1 (noticeably at back of title page and pages 9-10. Vol 4, red mark in margin of page 120. Volumes 7 & 8 have a moisture mark at the very bottom right corner (foreedge/bottom edge); this extends in a little over a cm at its worst, and often very little; the mark never gets anywhere near the text and is confined to the very corner region of the books. Vol. 8 has the same moisture intrusion at the gutter for the first 40 pages (in last picture). 6200 grams
