Hardback. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 445 pages; this is Vol. 9 of the 'Riverside Edition, The Writings of Oliver Wendell Holmes, in 14 volumes;' from the author's preface: "The character of the opposition which some of these papers have met with suggests the inference that they contain really important, but unwelcome truths.One thing is certain. A loud outcry on a slight touch reveals the weak spot in a profession, as well as in a patient. It is a doubtful policy to oppose the freest speech in those of our own number who are trying to show us where they honestly believe our weakness lies." Book condition: top edge is gilt, the other two have darkened somewhat; binding is quarter brown calf with larger corner wings, green attractive marbled boards and matching marbled endpapers; the vertical art-noveau floral design in gold and gold title letterling is attractive; both spine hinge areas have a narrow rub line where the brown dye has worn off, with similar "bare" spots on both vertical cover edges; all four cover corners show considerable wear (darker dye gone, lighter bare leather color shows), and on three of the corners a small amount of board can be seen. Contents approach VG; there are some uncut pages.
