Frontispieces and several plates in each volume. Title pages printed in black & red. This is the Standard Library Edition. A clean and attractive set in great condition. Sets of Bret Harte in this edition exist in varieties of 16, 19, and 20 volumes. The first edition of Harte's accumulated work was published in five volumes in 1882. The set was expanded to 14 volumes in 1897, then enlarged to 16 volumes to include his later work. Further additions expanded the set to 19, then 20 volumes; there is a later set which runs to 24 volumes. We believe this 16-volume set to be complete as issued, [1897 - 1902]. This is a heavy multi-volume set which will incur additional postage costs.

Hand-signed and numbered by Harte on limitation page of Vol. I. Many of the engraved plates are signed by the artists, including a signed frontispiece by Frederic Remington in Vol. V. This is a fine limited edition set of the works of Bret Harte. No. 293 of 350 printed. The first 14 volumes, offered here, comprise the original printing of the set. Additional volumes were added to the set in 1900-1903, with a final 20th volume in 1915. (BAL 7384).
