Eliot George. THE WRITINGS.Together With The Life by J. W. Cross. Boston Houghton Mifflin and Co. at the Riverside Press [1908], 1908.

Price: US$1045.00 + shipping

Description: 25 volumes. The Warwickshire Edition. Wonderfully illustrated with engraved frontispieces and with dozens of fine photogravure plates. 8vo, in the handsome original three-quarter brown morocco over red marbled boards, the spines with raised bands creating four gilt framed compartments with large gilt centerpieces and corners, and two gilt ruled compartments gilt lettered, red marbled endpapers, t.e.g. A nice and handsome set, internally quite fresh and clean, just a hint of age mellowing, a few leaves opened carelessly, a leaf here or there with tear, the spines very handsome with bright gilt, the shoulders rubbed just a bit, the hinges all still firm and strong, some very minor rubbing at the edges or tips. GEORGE ELIOT'S WORKS IN A FINELY ILLUSTRATED EDITION INCLUDING ALL OF HER CLASSIC NOVELS. It also includes a short biographical piece written by her husband, John Cross. Under her 'George Eliot' pen name Mary Ann Evans became on of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Her seven novels, most of which are set in provincial England, are known for their realism and psychological insight. Her novel Middlemarch has been described by the novelists Martin Amis and Julian Barnes as the greatest novel in the English language. Although female authors were published under their own names during her lifetime, she wanted to escape the stereotype of women's writing being limited to lighthearted romances. She also wanted to have her fiction judged separately from her already extensive and widely known work as an editor and critic.

ELIOT, George (pseud. EVANS, Marian).. The Writings.. Boston & New York Houghton Mifflin, 1908.

Price: US$7078.50 + shipping

Description: 25 vol. (complete, including "The Life"), "LARGE PAPER EDITION", LIMITED TO 750 SETS, 8vo, numerous photogravure plates, the frontispieces printed in coloured and uncoloured states, text age-toned, else fine, contemporary crushed brown half morocco gilt, top edge gilt, an extremely handsome set. George Eliot (1819-1880) was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, one of the leading English novelists of the 19th century. Her novels are celebrated for their realism and psychological insights. She used a male pseudonym to ensure her works were taken seriously in an era when female authors were usually associated with romantic novels. Virginia Woolf called Middlemarch 'one of the few English books written for grown-up people'. It is not a romantic novel, though it is a very passionate one. It is anti-romantic. It does not lead from frustrated love to fulfilled love to climactic marriage; it begins with the mistaken marriage choices of its "heroine" and "hero" and shows the inexorable workings of their coming to terms with their folly. Both are idealists. Both are very intelligent.

Octavo, contemporary full brown crushed morocco, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated boards and spines, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut and largely unopened. $11,000.Splendid large-paper edition of Eliot’s writings, number 29 of only 750 sets produced, with over 150 illustrations including hand-colored frontispieces in double-suite, with a signed autograph letter by Eliot bound into Volume I.Eliot, who pioneered the method of psychological analysis characteristic of modern fiction, has been praised for the qualities that make her "a supreme novelist in an age of great novelists" (Kunitz and Haycraft, 212). The illustrations reproduce original drawings by Charles Brock, Frederick Pegram, Ambrose Dudley, Henry Paget Archibald Hartrick and others, as well as photogravures by C. E. Walmsley, many taken for this edition, of English estates and countryside featured in Eliot's writings. The frontispieces appear in double suite, one of each beautifully hand-colored. Includes all of Eliot's major novels, as well as the essays and letters. With an extensive biographical and critical notice. The autograph letter, signed by Eliot (with her actual name, Marian Evans), reads: "1 Sydney Place Dover. March 20, 1855. Dear Friend, I wrote to you in a hurry the other day. I had not time to express what I really feel—thorough sympathy with you under this terrible trial of illness. Indeed in my first hasty reading of your letter I did not fully bring before myself the meaning of the words 'three weeks in bed from disease of the left lung.' But now I do so, I am grieved to think of what you must have suffered, so I write this note from old friendship, ___ with ___ to tell you how sincerely I shall be interested to know of your progress towards health. I suppose I shall be in London before long, but any news of you before then would be very welcome. There is no use in this letter, to be sure, but I couldn't help writing it. Perhaps after all it may do you a little good to know that you have the hearty interest and friendship of Marian Evans."Fine condition.

ELIOT, George.. The Writings. Together with the life by J. W. Cross.. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1908, 1908.

Price: US$11228.57 + shipping

Description: Large-paper edition, number 10 of 750 copies only, the first volume with a tipped-in 4-page autograph letter signed from George Eliot, signed as M[ary] E[vans] Lewes, using the surname of her longtime partner George Henry Lewes, although they were in fact not married. On her house stationary of The Priory, Regent's Park, Eliot writes to a Mr Benecke on 19 April 1872, seeking a country house for the summer: "the search for a house is always a difficulty, the precise thing one needs seeming of course to be the rarest kind. we desire perfect seclusion & yet nearness to a town - what you have, in fact, only that our scale would be much smaller". The couple would eventually let a house in Kent, which proved inconvenient, and they reluctantly returned to London that autumn. A very pleasing set, finely bound without wear, attractively printed and illustrated. 25 volumes, octavo (220 x 148 mm). Contemporary blue morocco by the Riverside Press, spines lettered in gilt, triple gilt fillets to covers and turn-ins, blue endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. With illustrations throughout. Ever so light sunning to spines. A fine set.
