Price: US$64.14 + shipping

Condition: Fair

Description: FIRST US EDITION. Small 4to, pp. [iv], 67, [1], incl. Hurd's charming illustrations in white and navy. Cream buckram spine, lettered in blue, navy paper boards, upper board lettered in white. Endpapers plus first and final pages white, text block pink, lettered in navy (at Stein's insistence). Externally shabby: worn, significant losses to spine ends, corners rounded. Endpapers and dedication page toned, liquid stain to top margins of first few leaves, grubby fingers marks, else, clean and tight. Fair. A binder's copy of Stein's only children's book, which had been helped into print by Margaret Wise Brown (whose own writing was influenced by Stein). Brown (1910-1952) had been hired in 1938 as W. R. Scott's first editor and tasked with recruiting contemporary authors to write children's books (she would herself go on to be a prolific and celebrated children's author). Stein, who was already at work on The World is Round, accepted with certain demands. While the book was printed in blue ink on pink paper, the publisher insisted on an in-house illustrator, rather than Stein's choice of Francis Rose. Clement Hurd (1908-1988) and Brown would go on to work successfully together. The World is Round follows Rose, a girl seeking her place in the world. In a press statement for her book, Stein advised readers: "Don't bother about the commas which aren't there, read the words. Don't worry about the sense that is there, read the words. If you have any trouble, read faster and faster until you don't." A limited edition of 350 copies, signed by both Gertrude Stein and Clement Hurd, was issued in a slip case.

Overall, a charming and collectible copy of Stein's classic children's book. Gertrude Stein (1874– 1946) was an American novelist, poet, playwright, and art collector. Born in the Allegheny West neighborhood of Pittsburgh, and raised in Oakland, California, Stein moved toParis in 1903, and made France her home for the remainder of her life. She hosted a Paris salon, where the leading figures of modernism in literature and art, such as Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sinclair Lewis,Ezra Pound, Sherwood Anderson and Henri Matisse, would meet. In 1933, Stein published a quasi-memoir of her Paris years, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, written in the voice of Alice B. Toklas, her life partner. The book became a literary bestseller and vaulted Stein from the relative obscurity of the cult-literature scene into the limelight of mainstream attention.[2] Two quotes from her works have become widely known: "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose,"[3] and "there is no there there", with the latter often taken to be a reference to her childhood home of Oakland. Her books include Q.E.D. (1903), about a lesbian romantic affair involving several of Stein's friends, Fernhurst, a fictional story about a love triangle,Three Lives (1905–06), and The Making of Americans (1902–1911). InTender Buttons (1914), Stein commented on lesbian sexuality.[4] Her activities during World War II have been the subject of analysis and commentary. As a Jew living in Nazi-occupied France, Stein may have only been able to sustain her lifestyle as an art collector, and indeed to ensure her physical safety, through the protection of the powerful Vichy government official and Nazi collaborator Bernard Faÿ. After the war ended, Stein expressed admiration for another Nazi collaborator, Vichy leader Marshal Pétain. Some have argued that certain accounts of Stein's wartime activities have amounted to a "witch hunt". (Wikipedia) First Edition with "First Edition" on the copyright page.
