The whole edition revised by Wells & with new prefaces, printed directly from type on specially made pure rag deckle-edge paper bearing the watermark H.G.W., some volumes still unopened. Octavo (23 x 16.5cm). Frontispiece in photogravure to each volume. Publisher's red buckram, gilt, the board edges bevelled, teg. A handsome set, without the usual fading to spines often found with this set, some occasional light marks to the cloth. With the contemporary engraved bookplate(s) of Lord Leverhulme. Vg. Description: Fisher Unwin London Atlantic Limited Edition #350/620, signed by author, 28 volumes complete. 1924. Overall condition is very good with the following defects noted: leading edges of all boards show wear at top corner (see scan), a few gutters have cracked paper (all binding is sound), some sunning to spines. Interiors are a high point. Prior book sellers pencil note in volume 1 otherwise no markings or bookplates. All page gatherings remain uncut except for a few in vol. 1. Description: One of 20 sets for presentation from an overall edition of 620, this is letter e and Wells has written (Little e), signed by H.G. Wells in volume one, and additionally inscribed by Wells in volume one to his lover Elizabeth von Arnim, "To Little e H.G." With her bookplate to all but two volumes. After her first husband's death, she had a three-year affair with the writer H. G. Wells, then later married Frank Russell, elder brother of the Nobel prize-winning writer and philosopher Bertrand Russell. She was a cousin of the New Zealand-born writer Katherine Mansfield. Her first marriage made her Countess von Arnim-Schlagenthin and her second Elizabeth Russell, Countess Russell. Though known in early life as May, publication of her first book introduced her to readers as Elizabeth, which she eventually became to her friends and finally even to her family. She is now known invariably as Elizabeth von Arnim. She used the pen nameÂAlice CholmondeleyÂonly for the novelÂChristine, published in 1917. According to Katy Roiphe's Uncommon Arrangements: Seven Portraits of Married Life in London Literary Circles 1910-1939, 2008, she "arranged for her married lover (H.G.ÂWells) to visit her Swiss chalet bedroom by means of a hidden entrance". The affectionate inscription confirms that, even after their affair had ended, they remained close friends. Octavo, 28 volumes. Bound in original publishers cloth, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, top edge gilt. Frontispiece illustrations including the author portrait in volume one. In near fine condition. An exceptional association. H.G. Wells is best remembered for his science fiction novels, and is called the father of science fiction, along with Jules Verne. His most notable works include The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898).

Signed limited edition, deluxe issue, number 711 of 1,050 sets signed by the author on the limitation leaf of Volume I and released for distribution in America, of which 50 were reserved for presentation. A further 620 sets were released by T. Fisher Unwin, Ltd, in Great Britain and Ireland, 20 of which were reserved for presentation. Wells contributed new prefaces especially for this edition, which was also issued in a blue morocco binding, with no priority between the two colours. 1.21m 28 volumes, octavo (225 x 152 mm). Publisher's deluxe red half morocco by Stikeman & Co., titles and decoration in gilt to spines, gilt raised bands, red cloth boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Frontispieces with tissue-guards, title pages printed in red and black. Very faint sunning to spines, a touch of rubbing to tips, the binding otherwise sharp, internally crisp, a near-fine set.
