Henry Fielding was a popular English novelist of the eighteenth century, one of the founders of the traditional English novel alongside Samuel Richardson. Though important in the literary world, Fielding is also noted in the history of law enforcement, as he founded the Bow Street Runners, the first full-time police force in London. Tom Jones is probably Fielding's best known work, a comical picaresque Bildungsroman originally published in 1749; here illustrated by W.
