After a brief run in politics, Whittier turned his attention to fighting against slavery which would became his life's work. Whittier used his literary talents to write anti-slavery publications, but he also used his political background to act as a lobbyist to try and convince politicians to join the abolition movement. Among Whittier's most significant accomplishments were his co-founding of the American Anti-Slavery Society and his signing of the 1833 Anti-Slavery Declaration. Edmund H. Garrett (1853-1929) was an American illustrator, designer of bookplates, painter, and author. He is known for his book illustrations, in particular, those accompanying the legends of King Arthur. Note about this edition by Whittier: "A small edition of this little volume was privately printed two years ago, and speedily exhausted among the author's friends. The demand for it since has been so persistent that he has consented to its publication in the present form. A few poems written since its previous issue are inserted in this new edition." James Maurice Thompson (1844-1901) was an American author and naturalist.

Neben seinem umfangreichen lyrischen Werk schrieb er den Roman Leaves from Margaret Smiths Journal (1849). 1871 wurde er in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences gewählt.
