S., at Deer Island on the Merrimac," "Burning Drift-Wood," "O. W. Holmes on His Eightieth Birthday," "James Russell Lowell," "Haverhill," "To G. G.," "Preston Powers, Inscription for Bass-Relief," "Lydia H. Sigourney, Inscription on Tablet," "Milton, on Memorial Window," "The Birthday Wreath," "The Wind of March," "To Oliver Wendell Holmes," "Between the Gates," and "The Last Eve of Summer." John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was an American author, a Fireside Poet, and an abolitionist. After a brief run in politics, Whittier turned his attention to fighting against slavery which would became his life's work. Whittier used his literary talents to write anti-slavery publications, but he also used his political background to act as a lobbyist to try and convince politicians to join the abolition movement. Among Whittier's most significant accomplishments were his co-founding of the American Anti-Slavery Society and his signing of the 1833 Anti-Slavery Declaration. Edmund H. Garrett (1853-1929) was an American illustrator, designer of bookplates, painter, and author. He is known for his book illustrations, in particular, those accompanying the legends of King Arthur. Note about this edition by Whittier: "A small edition of this little volume was privately printed two years ago, and speedily exhausted among the author's friends. The demand for it since has been so persistent that he has consented to its publication in the present form. A few poems written since its previous issue are inserted in this new edition." James Maurice Thompson (1844-1901) was an American author and naturalist.

Description: The American Oliver Wendell Holmes was very much a "Renaissance Man" - a poet, knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects and a physician. He was also trained for the legal profession. He was admired as a writer by his peers. This is a complete set of his works. Ex-library books, they are in good condition, with the expected plates and stamps, many of which can be easily removed (especially the spine stickers). Blue cloth binding, some minor bumping, but overall a nice set comprising 13 books of his writing and 2 books of his letters - all approximately 300 pages. This is obviously a heavy collection and additional postage may be required - we will advise.
