Corners show some fraying, rubbing, scuffing and bumping. Overall the book is just very old and shows it.

Octavo, ten volumes bound in full contemporary polished calf with morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, gilt ruling to the spine, tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece portrait of Franklin, illustrated. In good condition. Benjamin Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity, initially as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies. As the first United States Ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation. Franklin was foundational in defining the American ethos as a marriage of the practical values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment.

Containing several political and historical tracts not included in any former edition, and many letters official and private not hitherto published; with notes and a life of the author. Boston: Hilliard Gray, and Company, 1836-1840. First edition on Franklin's Works. Ten octavo volumes (9 1/4 x 5 5/8 inches; 234 x 143 mm). Six of the volumes with engraved frontispieces, five of which are portraits, and one is a facsimile of a letter. Some engraved plates throughout, a few of which are folding. Title-pages with dates ranging frm 1836-1840, volume I states 1840. Modern blue morocco. With Franklin's signature on front board in gilt. Some stamped with gilt eagles and lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. The final leaf of Volume II with outer corner torn, not affecting text. Frontis portraits in volumes IV and VII are toned, with some minor toning to following few pages. A plates in Volume IV also toned. Generally very clean throughout. An about fine set.
