Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Light waterstains on front and rear boards. Separation in gutter between frontispiece and title page. Some very minor foxing to preliminary pages. One page has a dog-eared corner. Some pages are un-opened. No prior ownership markings or bookplates. Overall VG with scarce original plain paper dust wrapper with printed publisher label affixed to spine. Jacket is VG with some age markings, light soiling, minor tiny paper loss at extremeties and some short edgetears. A most uncommon title to find in dust jacket. Undoubtedly most buyers rapidly discarded the unattractive jacket in favor of the rather luxurious blue cloth and gilt decorations of the binding itself. This was one volume (XV or 15) of a set. Conrad, Joseph. SUSPENSE. A Napoleonic Novel. , 1925.

Price: US$325.00 + shipping

Description: Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1925. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt, with dust jacket. First Trade Edition, first issue, of Conrad's last (unfinished) novel, posthumously published three months after DP&Co's 377-copy limited edition -- but one day before Dent's London edition. This first issue has no Introduction by Richard Curle (nor a reference to it on the title page). This volume is in fine, bright condition. Included is the first-issue dust jacket that is pictorially decorated in gold, black and orange -- "the first pictorial dust jacket used by Doubleday Page on a Conrad work" [Supino]. (The second issue, which does have the Introduction like the British edition, has a non-pictorial light blue jacket). The jacket's condition is near-fine (one short closed tear, just a touch of wear at the spine ends, but surprisingly free of soil). The American SUSPENSE is considerably less common than its English counterpart, especially in this first-issue dust jacket. Supino A26.2.0; Smith pp 100-101.
