Translated by Alexandre Baillot, this very handsome set includes two volumes of biography by Alfred Barbou (1846-1907). These editions are an excellent example of Estes and Lauriat's sumptuous work during this time, perhaps better described as "super de luxe, though not in the meretricious sense" (Kilgour, p. 159). Raymond L. Kilgour, Estes and Lauriat, a history, 1872-1898, 1957. 30 volumes, octavo (213 x 144 mm). Finely bound in near-contemporary dark blue morocco by the Harcourt Bindery of Boston, spines with raised bands, compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, decorative gilt panelling to sides, turn-ins tooled in gilt, blue endpapers, top edges gilt. Etched frontispieces, 172 similar plates with tissue guards captioned in red, title pages printed in red and black with portrait vignettes, illustrations to text. A fine set.
