Wells, H.G. Love and Mr. Lewisham: The Story of a Very Young Couple.. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1924.

Description: Early Scribner's reprint of one of Wells' first fictional writings outside the science fiction genre. Octavo, original publisher's cloth elaborately stamped in blind. In very good condition. Bookplate to the pastedown. Surplus deaccession stamp from the Library of Congress. Prolific in many genres, English author H. G. Wells wrote more than fifty novels and dozens of short stories. His non-fiction output included works of social commentary, politics, history, popular science, satire, biography and autobiography. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and, with Jules Verne, is widely regarded as the "father of science fiction." His most notable works include The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898).

Wells, H.G. [Herbert George Wells], 1866-1946.. THE TIME MACHINE, THE WONDERFUL VISIT, AND OTHER STORIES. The Works of H.G. Wells, Atlantic Edition Volume I. [Vol. 1-One only.]. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons [Scribner], 1924., 1924.

Price: US$2000.00 + shipping

Description: Sold as a stray volume only. Issued as the first volume of the twenty-eight volume "Atlantic Edition" being #841 of 1050 numbered sets SIGNED BY H.G. WELLS. i-xxiii, [1], 1-467 pages. Hardcover: H 24.25cm x L 16cm. Rebound in functional but not particularly elegant light brown cloth spine with green cloth boards; black stamped lettering to spine (although unmarked the rebinding is quite likely the work of Greenwood, Mississippi's Norris Bookbinding Company as it certainly reflects their exterior aesthetic which contrasts to their lauded and impeccably firm stitching). Toning to deckle edges; some leaves remain uncut at their top edges. New dark green front and rear endpapers and bold white flyleaves; original patterned front and rear free endpapers retained and bound-in as flyleaves. Copy# and limitation statement with Well's ink signature on page ii. B/w frontispiece portrait foxed with moisture stain at top fore-edge corner; tissue guard sheet still present. Laid-in between frontis and guard sheet is original extra paper title label provided by Scribner but which the rebinder decided not to use. Light foxing to title leaf with minimal occurrences to interior text pages. Aforementioned stitching is unassailable and the re-binding is crisp. Wells' THE TIME MACHINE is a cornerstone for any science fiction collection with the 1895 British and American firsts respectively by William Heinemann and Henry Holt being nearly unobtainable. Please note that this book has an approximate shipping weight of 3.25 pounds (1.47 kg) and may require additional postage and insurance for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
