Charles Dickens, John Forster, Alex J. Philip. Works of Charles Dickens in 34 volumes (Illustrated Library Edition, The Life of Charles Dickens, and A Dickens Dictionary bound into one uniform set). Chapman and Hall, 193, Piccadilly, London, 1873.

Price: US$1945.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A 34-volume combined set of Chapman and Hall's complete 30-volume Illustrated Library Edition of the Works of Charles Dickens, the 3-volume set of The Life of Charles Dickens by John Forster (13th edition; published by Chapman and Hall in 1873), and A Dickens Dictionary by Alex J. Philip (published by George Routledge and Sons in 1909), all bound uniformly in 3/4 blue-black morocco over marbled boards with five raised bands, gilt titles, and red and gilt decorative flowers on the spine. Matching marbled endpapers and gilt top edges top off this extremely handsome set. The original spine and front board of both the green Illustrated Library Edition and the red Life of Charles Dickens are bound into the backs of Volumes 1 and 31, respectively. The Illustrated Library Edition published by Chapman and Hall contained, "all the works the novelist wished to preserve. Calling it the first well-printed issue, with specially cast type and better paper than that used in previous editions, this set was published in 30 volumes between 1873 and 1876" (Oxford Companion to Dickens). Black and white illustrations by Hablot Knight "Phiz" Browne, Marcus Stone, George Cruikshank, Robert Seymour, George Cattermole, and John Leech appear throughout the set. An attractive bookplate is attached to the front endpaper of the three Forster volumes. There is a tiny bit of scuffing here and there to the raised bands, and Volumes 20 and 34 each have a small chip at the head of the spine. Otherwise, this set is in pristine condition. Pages in all volumes are bright, tight, clean and unmarked, and the bindings are sound. This complete set of the works and life of Charles Dickens would be a stunning addition to any bookshelf. Please see all images. Set is extremely heavy, weighing over 77 lbs, thus we regret international shipping would not be possible.
