LAMB Charles.. The Works of Charles Lamb. In Two Volumes.. London: Printed for C.and J, Ollier, Vere-Street, Bond-Street, 1818.

Price: US$320.82 + shipping

Description: The first collected edition in two volumes, small octavo (18 x 11cm). Published at 12s & dedicated to Coleridge. Vol, I, pp. ix,[3],291,[1],[2]; Vol. II, pp.[vi],259,[1],[2]. Original publisher's boards with printed labels, the first volume having being neatly recased, the second with the joints cracked and the label & spine a little chipped, the board edges on both volumes scuffed, but quite sound. The second volume with publisher's advert leaf dated June 1818 as called for, however, curiously, present in the first volume are 4pp of publisher's adverts dated 1834 not normally seen, indicating perhaps a later insertion, though Roff does mention seeing one copy with these leaves. Carter, in his 'Binding Variants' notes later issues from the 1830s isued in half and full cloth, so this copy would appear to be an anomaly. Some light foxing. Both volumes with MS ownership inscription for Buswell Park to front endpapers and on the rear paste-downs a small bookplate of Marion C. Walker. [Roff 135; Martin 18; Ashley Lib. III, 4; Carter 125]

LAMB, Charles.. THE WORKS OF CHARLES LAMB. In two volumes.. London: printed for C. and J. Ollier Vere-Street Bond-Street, 1818.

Price: US$384.98 + shipping

Description: Two volumes, 8vo, pp. ix, [iii], 291, [1] colophon; [vi], 259, [1] colophon, [2] advertisements; original blue-green moiré cloth, original printed paper labels (labels worn, spines chipped especially at joints). First edition of Lamb's collected works, rather a premature collection, since he was to live until 1834 and had not yet published the Essays of Elia. The collection is dedicated to Coleridge, with an affectionate preface recalling that Lamb and Lloyd had first appeared in print 'under cover of the greater Ajax'. A peculiarity of this edition is that the two volumes were printed by different shops, using different typefaces. Ashley III p. 49. Wise cites a 'half title' in volume I, which appears to be the fly-title reading 'Poems', here placed - presumably correctly - immediately before the text.
