Description: Together with a glossary, by a student of the same college, To the whole is prefixed, the author's life, newly written and a preface giving an account of this edition. Bound in full tan leather which is a little worn although in keeping with the age of the book. The front board is a little loose. Gilt ruled lines in between six raised bands and burgundy title band to the spine. All edges of the text block are coloured red although this has faded over time. Small bookplate to the front pastedown with small neat signature to the front free endpaper with the front free endpaper a little loose. Text double columned. Pages are remarkably clean throughout despite the occasional spot of foxing. Overall a good copy. First Urry Edition of Chaucer. John Urry was the first to use Roman instead of Gothic type and provides an enduring work of value to Chaucer scholars. He added three stories, The Cokes Tale Of Gamelyn, The Merchant's Second Tale and The Adventure of the Pardoner and Tapster at the Inn of Canterbury.nbsp;

"Urry's edition . . . is the first since that of William Thynne in 1534 to seek systematically to assemble a substantial number of manuscripts to establish his text. Urry was the first to use Roman rather than Gothic type. His use of all available manuscripts and use of citations give the work enduring value to Chaucer scholars. Urry added three stories: The Coke's Tale of Gamelyn; The Merchant's Second Tale, or the History of Beryn; and The Adventure of the Pardoner and Tapster at the Inn at Canterbury. Urry died before the completion of the work and Timothy Thomas completed it, as well as the glossary and preface. In an Appealing and Complex Full Leather Binding: The fields of an earlier (apparent 18th century) dark brown calf leather set of boards have been laid and bound over a later (apparent early 19th century) tan calf leather binding, so that the overall appearance of the leather is two-toned. The Original letteringpiece from the earlier (dark brown calf) binding is retained to the spine. Additionally, a thin and deliberate margin of the tan calf binding rules the boards, and this frontier has been tooled and black stained all around with floral sprays, etc. All edges of the boards and spine are dentelle tooled/rolled and gilt. The spines in seven (7) compartments with raised bands. The letteringpiece reads "URRY'S CHAUCER" and the foot of th spine is dated 1721. The spines RICHLY GILT. Raised bands with a gilt spiral and feather motif applied. The compartments with symmetrical, central, outwardly radiating floral wreaths, all gilt. HINGES SOLID, LEATHER VERY SUPPLE.
