Executed by a previously unknown artist who was a life-long resident of the city, this historic collection of colorful oil paintings includes renderings of several notable landmarks in pre-fire San Francisco, including portions of the Presidio, City Hall, and Alcatraz Island. Lewis contributes a foreword and companion text briefly describing the subject of each painting. Linen spine over decorative paper-covered boards, with a printed paper spine label. Faint offsetting to the endpapers, with some minor wear along the bottom edge of the boards; otherwise a near fine copy in the original plain brown paper dust jacket.

First edition, one of five hundred twenty-five copies printed by the Grabhorn Press. Carrie Van Wie's paintings of San Francisco scenes are reproduced in full-page color from watercolor drawings, the blocks engraved by Mary Grabhorn and printed over collotype plates. This was the Book Club of California's 1963 Christmas offering which celebrated forty years of collaboration between Oscar Lewis, the Grabhorn Press and the Club. Van Wie (1880-1947), born in San Francisco, was a self-taught artist. Her works include watercolors and oils of historic sites in her native city where she spent her entire life, such as the Cliff House and Fort Point.
