Baum, L. Frank; Cory, Fanny Y.. THE ENCHANTED ISLAND OF YEW. The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis, 1903.

Price: US$900.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition, first state of the children's fantasy novel by Baum published in the early days of his Oz success (and considered by many critics to be within the Oz universe) - a beautiful copy. Fairies, knights, and dragons populate this ever so slightly more traditional fantasy tale by Baum, though with a number of elements that remind readers of Oz - including a magician who is a fraud. At this early period, Baum was basking in the success of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ and its theatrical adaptation, but still experimenting with fantasies adjacent to Oz rather than squarely within what would become an epochal franchise. THE ENCHANTED ISLAND OF YEW's richly envisioned realm hearkens back to the stories of Arthurian romance, but is tinged with a humor and imagination that fit well into the wider Oz universe: appropriately, it is "a few miles off the east coast of Oz" on the International Wizard of Oz Club's official map of countries near Oz. 9'' x 7''. Original tan pictorial cloth stamped in orange and black. Pictorial endpapers in orange and black. Illustrated by Fanny Y. Cory with 8 lovely color plates plus in-text images printed in orange (illustration on page 238 printed upside down, ref. Bienvenue). Title page printed only in orange and black. Printed by Braunworth. [10], 242 pages. Only faint soiling and very light wear.

Price: US$1000.00 + shipping

Description: Green publishers cloth with orange and green pastedown illustration covering front cover with title of "The Wizard of Oz", spine printed title of The Wizard of Oz with lions head in center, Bobbs Merrill at base, plain paper endpapers, the whole measure 7.125" wide and 9 1/16" tall1.375" thick. 208 pp with 8 full-color plates and other full-page bw and illustrations. An early printing of the 1903 edition. Copyright page has three entries, the last being 1903. It should be noted that this is the only copy I have found that has a pasted image on the cover which shows the tin-man's hat tip piercing the text box, which makes me believe it to be an early or first printing of this edition style. Good, scuffing to covers, minor threadwear at top and base of spine, inner front hinge paper cleanly broken, cloth firm. Minor wear to tips of boards, minor light staining in two areas of rear cover. Contents tight and clean, original owner created a tiny paper pocket and stapled it to the rear free endpaper and tucked an even small piece of paper inside, like a card pocket. Previous owner has placed a bookplate inside front cover that appears to be late 20s or early 30s in style, of girl and horse, Color is worn off the cloth along the front outer hinge, but no breaks.

Baum, L. Frank. THE NEW WIZARD OF OZ. With pictures by W. W. Denslow. The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis [IN], 1903.

Price: US$12500.00 + shipping

Description: Second edition, second state, but the first Bobbs-Merrill printing of Baum's first book in the Oz series, originally published by George M. Hill as "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" in 1900. Square 8vo (8 3/4 x 6 5/8 inches). 259, (2) pp. Color illustrations throughout, including 16 plates. Signed by the author "Very Sincerely Yrs / L. Frank Baum" on a front endpaper. "As the early Bobbs-Merrill printings have substantially the same setting of text as the Hill printings, they are technically part of the same edition. For clarity, however, we have retained the traditional usage 'second edition.' G. Thomas Tanselle whom we cite in the introduction, suggests such printing created from earlier plates but by a new publisher should be considered 'sub-editions.' In which case, this is the first 'sub edition'" (Douglas Greene & Martin and Martin, Haff & David Green "Bibliographia Oziana"; International Wizard of Oz Club, 1988, pp. 28-31). Fine copy in a lovely new binding. In a new design binding: emerald morocco, gilt, the upper cover with an illustration of Dorothy's house being swept up by the tornado (taken from an illustration at the beginning of the first chapter), gilt rules and title between raised bands on the spine, all edges gilt, by the Chelsea Bindery.
