Description: We believe this is a first edition. Boards are deep red, worn at corners, top and bottom edges of spine. Vol I has cracked hinge at back, 3 small indentations on front cover, small smudge on back cover (see images). Previous owner's name in ink on front free flyleaf in both volumes, dated 1907. No other writing or marks on interior pages. Slight darkening on edges of text block. 329 pages in vol I,439 in vol II. 5" x 7 1/4" We'll send additional photos on request.

Description: First American edition, first printing. Two volumes in russet vertical ribbed cloth, a variant state binding noted by Edel & Laurence, who surmise it was issued simultaneously. Very Good, with wear at spine ends and corners, previous owner details scratched out on front free end papers. Volume I with inner hinges cracked but holding for now. Volume II shows scuffing and water drops to front cover, bumping to bottom corner of pages. A nice set, seemingly less common in the variant binding.

First edition, first printing with 1902 on title pages of both volumes, and "Published August 1902" on copyright pages with no later printings stated. Publisher's original primary binding of smooth sateen brown biscuit cloth, with lettering and flame insignia in gilt on spine, stamped Scribners at heel. Gilt top-edges with deckled fore-edge, and bottom edges. Stamped I and II on each respective volume, on spine. 329 pages for volume I, 425 page for volume II. Binding and hinges strong and sound on both volumes. No gutter cracks. A few minor marks/scuffs to exterior. Vintage, neatly written cursive signature of previous owner on FFEP, in each volume. Volume I has a trimmed photo of Henry James neatly pasted in on front pastedown. Small closed edge tear at corner of title page. Faint corner crease along corner tip of first few pages. Volume II has a pair of two small staple holes on title page. Both volumes have a touch of chipping at crown. Fllaws are over-disclosed as this is a very nice matching 2 volume set of Henry James' enduring classic, in publisher's primary preferred brown binding, in the first edition, first printing; and one of only 3,000 copies of the classic that The Modern Library ranked as the 26th best English-language novel of the 20th century. VG.
