Description: The First full colour illustrated edition, deluxe issue, number '170' of 250 copies signed and numbered by E.H. Shepard, published by Methuen Children's Books, London in 1971. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with the original publisher's full green morocco by Zaehnsdorf and protected by publisher's printed slipcase. Raised bands and gilt titles to spine. The upper cover has a gilt stamped illustration of the characters from the books. All edges gilt. Slight toning to the spine as usually encountered. Free from inscriptions. Housed in the publisher's original pictorial slipcase which is in Very Good+ condition. A small stain to the front of the top edge, some slight age related markings with some light fading to the edges. Colour illustrations throughout by E. H. Shepard. Shepard, well-known by then for his illustrations of A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh series, was asked to provide B/W illustrations for a new edition in 1931. For this edition, Shepard redrew his illustrations, basing them on the 1931 illustrations, and added colour. Very collectible. More images available on request. Description: First edition thus. Deluxe signed limited edition. Original publisher's full green morocco by Zaehnsdorf, in the publisher's printed slipcase. Five raised bands and titles in gilt to the spine, the upper board illustrated in gilt. All edges gilt. Full colour endpapers, illustrations throughout by E. H. Shepard. A lovely fine copy, the binding square and tight, and without fading or toning of the spine. The contents with a small previous owner's bookplate to the blank front free endpaper are clean, bright and fine throughout. The original slipcase remains firm with just the lightest of rubbing at the extremities. A beautiful example. Limited to 250 copies of which this is hand numbered 110 and signed by E. H. Shepard in black ink on the limitation page. Originally illustrated by Shepard in black and white for the 1931 printing of Kenneth Grahame's classic tale, for this edition the artist redrew the illustrations based on those originals, adding colour for the first time.
