Description: Limited edition. One of 300 copies printed by the Colt Press. Signed by Valenti Angelo but not Janet Lewis. Angelo's signature is in black ink on the front free endpaper. Original publisher's light blue boards backed with dark blue cloth. Beige paper spine label with black lettering. Deckled edges. 6 1/2" x 9 3/4." 153 pages, complete. Back colophon: "Of this first edition published by the Colt Press in October, 1941, three hundred copies have been hand colored by the illustrator and signed by both him and the author." Despite the text of the back colophon, this copy is signed by Valenti Angelo but not Janet Lewis. "Decorations by Valenti Angelo" on title page. Bookplate with an illustration of a squirrel tipped in on front pastedown: "Hawley Ellason Strong; His Book; Store Up!" Pages are very clean and intact. Covers are very clean and intact except for some light rubbing at the corners and edges and a few small marks on the front and back. Binding is tight. A Very Good copy. Historical fiction about the infamous case involving the imposture of Martin Guerre in sixteenth-century France. Janet Lewis (1899-1998) was an American novelist and poet. In 1992, she was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Valenti Angelo (1897-1982) was an Italian-American printmaker, illustrator, and author. He was renowned for his printmaking and linocuts, and his work appeared in numerous books during his career.
