Curiously, due no doubt to paper conservation, th e interior of the dj. presents a design for an entirely different title) Uncommon in this imprint. Author's THIRD book.

Description: First edition. Hardcover. Some inoffensive staining along the top and bottom edges of the cloth, a discreet stamp from a South Australian institute on the front paste-down (hidden under the front flap), o/w very good in like dustjacket with a few small professionally closed tears and equally small repairs at the head and tail of the spine (with the loss of the small "the" in the title). Welty's second collection of stories, and quite scarce in jacket, due partly to the economic standards of binding in war-time (the jacket, for instance has printed on the verso artwork for "Unlucky Farm" by F.E. Mills Young, as called for in this first printing).

Description: A UK first edition, first impression. THE WRAPPER : The wrapper on this copy is bright and complete. It has been printed on the reverse of a wrapper for an F E Mills Young novel. The wrapper is unclipped, showing the price 7s 6d on the inside flap. The front panel is bright and unfaded. It is gently rubbed to the edges and there is a small nick out of the top edge. The bottom edge shows gentle creasing. The spine is sound. It is gently toned and shows light scuffing and rubbing to the ends. The back panel is sound, showing light overall soiling and a touch of light rubbing to the edges. There is a small, invisible split running up the leading edge / back flap crease. THE BOOK : The book is square and very tight. The boards are clean and unfaded. The corners and the spine ends are gently bruised. The pages are clean. No foxing. The closed page edges are slightly toned and slightly dusty. There are no loose or dog-eared pages. The binding is solid and without cracked hinges. There are no previous ownership inscriptions. A nice copy in a protected wrapper. Paypal accepted.

A sliver of discolouration to the head of the backstrip where the dust wrapper is defective. A very good copy in tanned, rubbed and chipped non-price-clipped dust wrapper with several tiny areas of loss to the spine ends and corner tips. Contemporary former owner gift inscription neatly inked to the head of the front free endpaper. Eight short stories, the author's third book and second collection of short fiction.
