Description: One of 200 copies (the ordinary issue) from a total limited edition of 320. Quarter buckram and Whittington marbled paper boards, quarto, 39 cm, 83 pp, ills, plates, folded type-specimen. John Randle (in Butcher's second bibliography) comments: "The seeds of the idea of a short checklist of our books were first sown in about 1978, when David Butcher suggested he might compile such a list. But once sown, the plant grew rapidly: David's entries were far longer and more thorough than I had anticipated (like a terrier after a rabbit, he would allow no detail to pass unchecked). Then later, when I read Christopher Sandford's three- volume bibliography of the Golden Cockerel Press, I was attracted to the idea of writing a short piece about each book after the main bibliographical entry, as he had done, putting flesh on to the bare bones. I did not find it easy to write about the Press in an objective and impersonal way, having lived with it twenty-four hours a day for ten years. Rose rightly rejected my first effort, which went in the bin. The descriptions of the individual books came more easily. Finally, the two halves of the typescript, David's and mine, were married together, and setting began. Only when we proofed the first galleys did we realise that the mould on the Monotype caster was faulty and the type was bottle necked (narrower at the top than at the bottom) and therefore tended to fall over at the ends of lines. Fortunately, when we put the book on the press, the problem was not insuperable and we did not have to re-cast." Copy No. 167. Small mark to rear board, otherwise Fine.
