Description: A very good copy of this scarce first edition of Wordswoth's poem The White Doe of Rylstone, 4to, measuring 9" x 11" and bound in later half red morocco with matching colour boards. All edges speckled red, later end papers. Spine lettered gilt. Engraved frontis by J C Bromley and painted by Sir George Beaumont. A single hot press crease runs through the pages, more pronounced at the beginning of the work - not affecting anywhere the text. Minor offsetting from frontis Title page with two signatures, penned. The very last page is browned. Originally composed in 1807 by Wordsworth this narrative poem was not well received at private readings and following suggestions made by Coleridge, he withheld it from publication for a period of seven years. Having revised it substantially the work was published in 1815 in an expensive quarto edition. xi & 162pp.

Half-title, engraved frontispiece by J. C. Bromley after a painting by Sir George Beaumont. A bit of offsetting to title-page, generally an excellent copy. The White Doe of Rylstone; or, The Fate of the Nortons is a long narrative poem by William Wordsworth, written initially in 1807–08 but not finally revised and published until 1815. It is set during the Rising of the North in 1569, and combines historical and legendary subject-matter. "During the summer of 1807, the Author visited, for the first time, the beautiful Scenery that surrounds Bolton Priory, in Yorkshire; and the Poem of The White Doe, founded upon a Tradition connected with the place, was composed at the close of the same year" (Advertisement).

Description: FIRST EDITION. Large 4to. Half title, front. Contemp. quarter green morocco, marbled boards; corners chipped, extremities rubbed. An internally v.g. bright copy in a good-plus binding. Wise (12). Wordsworth completed The White Doe in 1808 and immediately set about trying to get it published, both by going directly to the publisher Longman, and having Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Charles Lamb try to sell it on his behalf. After failing to come to an acceptable agreement, he decided not to publish, and over the next several years revised and extended the text. This volume was finally published in the spring of 1815 to mixed reviews.

Description: FIRST EDITION PRESENTATION COPY. 1 vol., 10-3/8" x 8-5/8", inscribed on the half-title by Wordsworth "To his friend/Francis Merewether/April 26 1821", engraved frontispiece by J.C. Bromley after Sir George Beaumont, bound in 1/2 tan morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spine, gilt lettered red and green morocco spine labels, edges tinted red, inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spine fine, some offsetting to title-page otherwise internally clean and bright, a VERY GOOD copy. Francis Merewether, the rector of Cole Orton in Leicestershire, was a High Church priest and a prolific pamphleteer, and is perhaps best known as a close friend of William Wordsworth. Wordsworth provided him with presentation copies of his books, many of which are still extant.
