Description: Large squarish 8vo; (10), 124 plus 16 pages of ads at the end dated 1895 for Bodley Head titles. Bound in pinkish-tan / light rose satin grain cloth; gilt title, author, publisher and pomegranate device on spine; gilt title and author on front cover, and with pomegranate devices printed in light yellow (almost invisible) on the four corners. All edges untrimmed. Some very slight bubbling and fading to covers, but a very nice copy of this fragile volume. First edition, with cover design, title page (printed in orange), and six full page plates by Laurence, each with a guard leaf printing the plate's title. There were two variant bindings of the English edition of The Were-Wolf. This one, and one in sage green with the pomegranate devices blocked in blue. Copies in the pinkish binding have a Japan vellum paper guard inserted between the frontispiece and the title page; the green copies have a wove paper guard, and often lack the ads at the end. Some copies appear - trimmed, and bound in dark brown vertically ribbed cloth, stamped in black. These are the copies offered by the firm of Way & Williams in Chicago. Both Krishnamutri and Ian Hodgkins state that the entire edition consisted of 1000 copies. A classic of English Eighteen-nineties design, text and illustration. Clemence's first novel, described variously as an allegorical erotic fantasy, a Christian allegory, and a tale promoting women's rights, women's suffrage and the 'New Woman'.
