The Water Witch was written in Naples and was first printed in Dresden in September 1830, a month before the English edition, and prior to the American edition. BAL records examples of the first Amerian editionwith and without the ads preceding the title in vol. 1, and with ads of varying dates from November 1830 to September 1831 (as here). BAL 3847 Publisher's boards, spines perished with only a small remnant of the vol. 2 spine with lettering. Two volumes in one. 7"x4.25"; v1 256 pp., v2 251 pp. Half calf with marbled boards, black morocco spine label. Boards show moderate scuff and corner bumps. Light foxing throughout, inked names at top of title page of volume two. Just a bit short Very Good by technical standards, but it faces up substantially better. Handsome. See scans. First American edition of James Fenimore Cooper's tale of Tom Tiller, the bold and kind smuggler, a sympatico outlaw who represented an America ideal of the time - bucking the system against the commerce-controlling British. BAL 3847, with the inserted catalogue at the front of Vol. I with the Nov. 1830 date. 19thc. bookseller's ticket on front pastedown in Vol. I; old ink signature at the head of each title page; light and inoffensive foxing to portions of the text; some chipping to the extremities of the paper backstrip to Vol. II; nevertheless a beautiful example of original condition.

First edition, later issue with the spine label reading "Novels and Tales by the Author of the Spy, Vol. XVII (and XVIII respectively). 8vo., orig. rust cloth spines, pale green paper boards, printed spine labels, vi, (7)-256; 252pp. WIthout the adverts in volume one. Some foxing throughout, boards a bit soiled, some of wear to spine ends and rear gutters of both volumes but this is still a better than very good but not quite near fine copy. BAL 3847 for first issue. The pagination and titlepage conforms to that given by BAL 3847, the only indication of the later edition is the spine labels and the binding which does not conform with those given by BAL.
