Winston S. Churchill. The War Speeches of the Rt. Hon. Winston S. Churchill, Volume II. Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston, 1953.

Price: US$125.00 + shipping

Description: This is the second and middle volume of the U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches. This edition was published during Churchill's second and final premiership. While there were 4,700 copies of the British first edition, the incredibly small U.S. edition was limited to a mere 500 sets. These 500 sets were produced from British edition sheets. Internally, only the title and copyright pages differ from the British edition, but this U.S. first edition was bound quite differently and more elaborately than its British counterpart. The volumes feature a black cloth spine decorated and printed in gilt, over red cloth boards. The contents are bound with yellow-stained top edge and head and foot bands. The light blue and black dust jackets are illustrated with a reproduction from Churchill's hand-corrected typescript of the first Secret Session speech. This copy of Volume II of the U.S. first edition is fine in a poor dust jacket. The binding is square, clean, and tight with bright gilt, sharp corners, and virtually no wear. The contents remain crisp and bright and the book feels unread. We find no previous ownership marks, no spotting, and the dark yellow topstain is unfaded. The dust jacket remains clean and unfaded. The front flap is unclipped, still featuring the original publisher's price. Unfortunately, the jacket has become brittle and shows loss along the upper rear panel, upper spine, upper right front face, all along the rear hinge, and a larger loss and closed tear at the lower front corner, as well as some scuffing to the spine. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. Of Winston Churchill’s Second World War oratory, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." When Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, it was partly " for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values." Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes in both British and U.S. editions. In 1952, early during Churchill's second premiership, the British publisher - Cassell - reissued the War Speeches as a new, "Definitive" three-volume British edition. This U.S. edition was issued in 1953. The three-volume edition of Churchill's War Speeches is considered superior to the original seven wartime volumes. New speeches are added, as is a very helpful index. Some of the original speeches considered peripheral are eliminated while others are retitled and chronological dates are replaced with brief transitional or introductory notes. The aesthetic improvement is particularly dramatic for this U.S. edition, in which three substantial, uniform volumes replace the original seven, differentially sized volumes, which were issued by three different publishers, several volumes printed on cheap, wartime paper.Reference: Cohen A263.2, Woods A136(b), Langworth p.305

Winston S. Churchill. The War Speeches of the Rt. Hon. Winston S. Churchill, Volume II. Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston, 1953.

Price: US$190.00 + shipping

Description: This is the second volume of the U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of historical note - member of Parliament for more than half a century, distinguished soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner. But more than anything else, it was Winston Churchill's leadership during the Second World War that made him a preeminent historical figure. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle."Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes in both British and U.S. editions. In 1952, during Churchill's second premiership, the British publisher - Cassell - reissued the War Speeches as a new, "Definitive" three-volume British edition. This U.S. edition was issued in 1953. The light blue and black dust jackets are illustrated with a reproduction from Churchill's hand-corrected typescript of the first Secret Session speech. This copy of Volume II of the U.S. first edition is near-fine in a very good dust jacket. The binding is square, clean, and tight with bright gilt, sharp corners, and virtually no wear. The contents remain crisp and bright and the book feels unread. We find no previous ownership marks and the dark yellow topstain is unfaded. The sole flaw that prevents us grading this volume as fine is a trivial few spots confined to the otherwise clean page edges and the rear pastedown. The dust jacket remains clean and unfaded. The front flap is neatly price-clipped and has a single vertical crease and there are two .25 inch chips at the upper hinges. We note minor wrinkling and wear to the upper front panel and corners and a .5 inch closed tear to the lower rear panel. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.Reference: Cohen A263.2, Woods A136(b), Langworth p.305.

CHURCHILL, Winston S.. The War Speeches. Compiled by Charles Eade in three volumes.. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company; The Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1953, 1953.

Price: US$1242.88 + shipping

Description: First US collected edition, first printing, being the definitive edition of Churchill's war speeches, compiled by his literary secretary. During the war, Churchill's speeches were published in annual volumes. "Produced to cheap standards owing to wartime shortages and restrictions, the original volumes were all out of print by 1952. Cassell decided to reissue the war speeches in a new, expansive and comprehensive edition of three tall, elegant volumes printed in large type and generous margins on quality stock" (Langworth, p. 303). The American edition was issued from sheets of Cassell's first British edition, published the previous year. Only 500 sets of the American edition were made, and it is much scarcer than its British counterpart, more so with the slipcase. Langworth comments his dislike for the binding and jacket design, "but none of this matters because of the extreme rarity" (ibid). Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes. Cohen A263.2. Richard M. Langworth, A Connoisseur's Guide to the Books of Sir Winston Churchill, 1998. 3 volumes, large octavo. Original black quarter cloth, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, red cloth sides. With dust jackets, housed in original blue cloth slipcase. Jackets price-clipped, jacket of vol. I chipped at extremities with slight loss, others with only minor rubbing and nicking at extremities; slipcase a little rubbed with slight wear at extremities: fine copies in very good jackets and slipcase.

Winston S. Churchill. THE WAR SPEECHES: "DEFINITIVE EDITION" -First American Edition-. Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1953.

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: This is a very good example, in unclipped dust jackets, of the far rarer American issue of the "Definitive Edition." Only 500 copies were produced, using sheets from the British print run. The dust jackets here are bright and intact, with short tears and edge chipping to the front faces, and fractional losses at the the spine heads, most significantly more than an inch to Volume III. The books appear unopened, but there is dusty fading to all three spines and modest browning to the pages. The contents are otherwise fine. First American Edition (Cohen A263.2) (Woods A136b).

Winston S. Churchill. The War Speeches of the Rt. Hon. Winston S. Churchill, the exceptionally scarce U.S. issue of the three-volume "definitive" edition published during Churchill's second and final premiership. Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston, 1953.

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Description: This is the quite scarce U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches in both dust jackets and the extremely rare publisher’s slipcase – only the third set we have offered thus and the most complete. This edition was published during Churchill's second and final premiership. While there were 4,700 copies of the British first edition, this incredibly small U.S. edition was limited to a mere 500 sets. These 500 sets were produced from British edition sheets. Internally, only the title and copyright pages differ from the British edition, but this U.S. first edition was bound quite differently and more elaborately than its British counterpart. Each of the volumes features a black cloth spine decorated and printed in gilt, over red cloth boards. The contents are bound with yellow-stained top edge and head and foot bands. The light blue and black dust jackets are illustrated with a reproduction from Churchill's hand-corrected typescript of the first Secret Session speech. Houghton Mifflin issued the three volumes in an undecorated navy leatherette slipcase. This full U.S. three-volume set in the original dust jackets and publisher's slipcase features beautiful fine volumes in very good dust jackets and slipcase. The volumes are immaculate inside and out, the bindings square and sharp-cornered, the contents crisp, clean, and tight, the topstain bright, no ownership marks, spotting, or soiling to report. Each volume feels pleasingly stiff and unread. Two of three dust jackets remain unclipped – Volumes II & III – these retaining the original "3 Volumes, $25.00" front flap pricing, with only the Volume I jacket neatly clipped at the upper front flap. The jackets are clean and bright, showing only the most faintly discernible toning of the pale blue spine color. Shallow chip losses to a maximum depth of .5 inch (1.27 cm) are confined to the spine ends and the upper rear face of the Volume I jacket. All three dust jackets are now protected with clear, removable, archival covers. The publisher’s slipcase is in very good condition, clean with minor, superficial shelf scuffs and blemishes and a partial split to the lower right edge.During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of note - Member of Parliament for more than half a century, soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner, painter. But Churchill's preeminence as a historical figure owes most to his indispensable leadership during the Second World War, when his soaring and defiant oratory sustained his countrymen and inspired the free world. Of Churchill, Edward R.

Description: This is the quite scarce U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches in both dust jackets and the extremely rare publisher’s slipcase – only the fourth set we have offered thus and definitively the best-preserved set we have encountered. This full U.S. three-volume set features beautiful fine volumes in very good plus dust jackets and slipcase. The volumes are immaculate inside and out, the bindings square and sharp-cornered, the contents crisp, clean, and tight, with no spotting or soiling, the topstain bright, the fore and bottom edges immaculate. Provenance is unequivocally Churchillian; the sole previous ownership marks are the printed sticker of "The Churchilliana Company" affixed to each lower rear pastedown and to each dust jacket verso. This was the bookselling enterprise of Dalton Newfield (1918-1982), not only the world’s first Churchill-specialist bookseller, but also the senior editor of the International Churchill Society’s journal, Finest Hour. As an American WWII veteran, Dalton returned from wartime Europe with both an English bride and an abiding respect for Churchill. The dust jackets are clean and bright, with no toning and no losses apart from neatly price-clipped upper front flaps. Light wear is mostly confined to extremities, with a little superficial scuffing to the surfaces - most likely minor injury suffered by the jackets as they were removed or replaced in the original publisher’s dark blue leatherette slipcase. That slipcase is in superior condition, clean and fully intact with minor, superficial shelf scuffs and blemishes. All three dust jackets are now protected with clear, removable, archival covers.
