Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first impression. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly bruised, front flap slightly stretched, some spotting and yellowing to page fore edges, spine slightly faded, not price clipped (£5.95), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and almost square, overall a vg copy. 155pp. In 1812, Francisco Manoel da Silva, escaping a life of poverty in Brazil, sailed to the African kingdom of Dahomey, determined to make his fortune in the slave trade. Armed with nothing but an iron will, he became a man of substance in Ouidah and the founder of a remarkable dynasty. His one remaining ambition is to return to Brazil in triumph, but his friendship with the mad, mercurial king of Dahomey is fraught with danger and threatens his dream. Bruce Chatwin (1940-89), had first heard of de Sousa during a visit to Dahomey in 1972. He returned to the country, by then renamed the People's Republic of Benin in December 1976 to conduct research. In January 1977, during the 1977 Benin coup d'etat attempt, Chatwin was accused of being a mercenary and detained for three days. Following his arrest and release, Chatwin left Benin and went to Brazil to continue his research on de Sousa. Frustrated by the lack of documented information on de Sousa, Chatwin chose instead to write a this fictionalised biography of him. Werner Herzog's film 'Cobra Verde' (1987) is based on it. This was Chatwin's second book.
