Price: US$193.24 + shipping

Description: xvi, [2], 291pp, [1]. With 114 colour illustrations in the text. Bound by Douglas Foulis of Edinburgh in contemporary gilt-tooled red morocco, A.E.G. Lightly rubbed. Marbled endpapers, inked inscription to recto of front blank fly-leaf, scattered spotting. A handsome copy of an illustrated edition of Anglo-Irish author Oliver Goldsmith's (1730-1774) most renowned work. First published in 1766, The Vicar of Wakefield would become one of the defining novels of the eighteenth-century. Sadly the author was to profit little from the sensational success of the work, as Samuel Johnson had sold the rights for £60 in order to relieve Goldsmith from the pursuit of debtors. Size: 8vo

Goldsmith, Oliver. The Vicar of Wakefield, with Prefatory Memoir By George Saintsbury, and 114 Coloured Illustrations. John C. Nimmo, London, 1886.

Price: US$225.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 4to. xvi + 291 pp. Very handsome illustrated rendition of classic country manners novel of Goldsmith's. Poirson's colored illustrations perfectly complement the story, capturing its sweetness and Georgian society, while being very much influenced by the arts and crafts ornamentation and style of the 1880s. While Rackham's illustrations have become more closely associated with the novel, Poirson's are more fitting and in concordance with its mood and spirit. This copy is very tight and clean. The leather does have some shelfwear along the edges, and the spine, with five raised bands, is a little dulled, or I would deem it in fine condition.
